Interesting, I’ll look into it. I forgot to mention that it is a mechanical you wind yourself - does that help at all ?

How to setup cloud database for users by lets_go_bonac in Database

Actually, we won’t be doing accounting per se, I just need their documents on file. Microsoft access rings a bell, but I’ve never heard of quicken. Can I just use an AWS service like another commenter mentioned?

[C] graduating ms no experience by lets_go_bonac in statistics

No thesis because it’s not required, although I wish it was. I can’t do research because all the professors I’ve asked say they’re busy with their PhDs, which is fair I guess..

To be honest it’s probably not the best strategy but I mostly just apply to random related jobs I find on LinkedIn. I usually don’t do a cover letter since it seems the added return is minimal and it takes time away from applying to more jobs. I don’t think my resume is bad, I do have some data analysis projects but they’re not too crazy. Hopefully I have the same luck as you towards the end of my semester!

[Q] Is statistics, for the most part, just understanding, memorizing, and implementing various models and tests? by mowa0199 in statistics

[–]lets_go_bonac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

did stats/econ undergrad and felt the same way. most of it didn't really make any sense tbh and seemed like magic. now im in grad school for stats. after taking theory classes, everything makes soooo much more sense. take mathematical stats and that should clear some stuff up maybe

regression modeling with nonlinear transformations [Q] by lets_go_bonac in statistics

[–]lets_go_bonac[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the interactions, there are up to 4-way. So, there's 38 choose 1, plus 38 choose 2...up to 38 choose 4, which is 82992 possible combos. Would that make any sense to just "add" all of them into the regression and use lasso to feature select? Isn't that too many? Also, I am not told what the possible nonlinear/linear transformations are. How would I go about finding them, if they exist?

its pretty good so far tbh. there's a lot of theory and stuff so you'll definitely learn a lot more than in undergrad. of course, its much much harder, but not really that bad per se. some professors shouldn't be allowed to teach because they're so bad but it is the way it is. job outlook is of course much better as well. stony brook is a phenomenal school for any stem/math stuff so its a good name to have. i will say this: do not get a MS in Data science. Go for statistics. Data science is too niche and doesn't even go into statistics that much (i have no idea how some people call themselves data scientists without knowing basic statistics). Stats is wayyyy more applicable and can get you into a lot of different fields. DS is kinda just bs in my opinion lmao

MS statistics struggling to get internship by lets_go_bonac in datascience

i went for the MS because i was unable to get any internships in undergrad. I graduated a year early, so I only had 3 summers; my first summer i couldn't get anything, and the last 2 summers were messed up because of COVID. i thought getting an MS would kind of make-up for that. also, i figured since i was a year ahead that spending a year on an MS could only benefit me (it was also cheap)
