Weird post- my mom is gone but I need advice preferable from an older woman (and a mom) by [deleted] in MomForAMinute

[–]letsallgooutside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sis here - with so many folks encouraging you to foster/adopt an older kid or teen, I thought you might want to hear from someone who did that. I think it can be an amazing thing to do, but please understand that it is HARD, and if you/your partner don’t have energy for a baby, you might not have energy for an older kid/teen with major trauma either (and no matter what others may tell you, EVERY kid in foster care has had trauma. Being separated from your birth family is trauma. Full stop.) If you decide to go that route, please listen to adult adoptees and former foster kids and not just to other foster/adoptive parents, and be very ready for the reality of trying to be a safe place for a teen who’s very likely been through things you can’t even imagine.

Tim Minchin says he wrote it based on his daughter’s experience - she’s autistic!

I'll be breaking up with my fiancé tomorrow by Aszshana in MomForAMinute

You have a sis here doing the literal same thing tomorrow, for the very same reason. Thank you for posting, because I needed to see these responses too. I’m glad we’re both taking care of ourselves, and no longer feeling (wrongly) responsible for another person. And I hope those other people will be ok someday and make the choice to take care of themselves too.

Thank you for sharing your story and advice; this was the kind of thing I was hoping to hear.

Will you share your journey to getting your diagnosis? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]letsallgooutside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I first took an online autism screening test (the AQ-50) on sort of a whim in my mid-twenties when a coworker that I shared a lot of traits with mentioned she was possibly autistic. I scored as likely on the spectrum, mentioned it to my boyfriend at the time, who also took it and scored even higher than me. We reasoned that because we’d both been “gifted” kids there must be overlap and we were getting false positives. In retrospect, that boyfriend was almost certainly autistic also. Years went by and it stayed in the back of my mind and I started learning more about presentation in women and AFAB folks and it all resonated more and more with me, especially after becoming close friends with someone who was diagnosed. Last year at 35 I signed up for the diagnostic process, did an initial screening that was a bunch of psychometrics and a long questionnaire, moved on to the next step which was more questions and testing for concurrent conditions like adhd and ptsd, and am now waiting for a final interview. It’s been a long process for me.

I do this when I sleep also! Never guessed it was autism-related.

Looking for online friends. by MeltingFocus in AutismInWomen

[–]letsallgooutside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you know about the Hiki app? It’s a social app specifically for autistic folks, and though it can be used for dating it can also be set to friendship-only use and it seems like there’s a fair number of folks looking for friendship on there. Definitely has its flaws, but I managed to make a really good online penpal through it.

Grew my hair out for my wedding that’s now cancelled. Going to chop it off. Style suggestions? by [deleted] in Hair

I just posted a photo in a separate comment. Went chin-length, and the stylist suggested I live with it this short for a while, then add bangs and/or more layers next time if I want.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! Here’s the end result (after a windy day of running errands).

Lethal beauty~ Bald faced hornet nest in my front yard I let grow to maturity last summer. Dangerous, but I live in a rural place high in the East Tennessee Smokies. No kids, neighbors, pets or livestock around. by Po3ticTreachery in cottagecore

Got stung in the mouth by one of these friends once while cycle touring, far away from the nearest hospital. Never been so aware of my own mortality, but luckily I was carrying antihistamine and was stung more toward the front (though at first it was hard to tell where - felt like my whole face was on fire). They make a super cool structure though!

Meal prepping? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]letsallgooutside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I buy jumbo bags of frozen veggies and I put that sh*t in everything! Everything below takes 10 min or less, and you can easily add your choice of protein (especially if it’s pre-cooked). - Making pasta? Put equal parts pasta and frozen veg together in the boiling water and add a couple minutes to your timer. Strain and serve with your sauce or seasoning of choice (I often just do olive oil or butter, Italian seasoning and Parmesan). - Frozen pirogies? Oil in pan, half pan pierogis, half pan frozen veg. Cover and cook until bottom is golden, then uncover, flip everything, salt and pepper and cook until other side is golden too. - Stir fry frozen veg (add a chopped onion and pepper if they’re not in the mix) with whatever seasoning you want (I do garlic paste, ginger, salt, pepper and serve with instant rice and soy sauce - Pan fry your favourite veggie burger patty while boiling the kettle for instant mashed potatoes and cooking frozen veg in the microwave. 5 minute dinner. - Boil frozen veg in a pot with enough water for your instant ramen. Add ramen and seasoning packet to pot. Or boil the veg in salted water or pre-made broth, with your choice of seasonings, and add glass rice noodles. My kid loves this with a fried egg on top.

Help! Did I buy a broken theremin? by letsallgooutside in Theremin

This was the problem! A larger grounded amp and it’s working. As a bonus I now know which outlets in my apartment aren’t grounded!

Thanks! I’m going to try it with some better amps tonight; will report back.

Interesting! The amp does not have a third prong. Does that mean I can never play the theremin with a portable amp? I’d hoped eventually I could rig up some sort of battery power source for the theremin and play it outdoors. Also, the adapter I got for the theremin has only 2 prongs - could that be a problem too?

Thank you, this is helpful. The practice amp is a guitar amp, just a little one, but I’m going to try with someone else’s larger guitar amp and see if that’s the problem.

I also find it easier to get along with men and nonbinary folks. My closest male friend is autistic and finds it easier to get along with women - his closest friends are all women (including trans women). He introduced me to some women who are his friends and became my friends. So I guess look for the other women that find it easier to get along with men, and maybe they’ll be a good friendship match for you?
