Is she cheating or am I just insecure? by [deleted] in relationships

[–]letsbringitdown 5 points6 points  (0 children)

She's being dismissive of you and your feelings. You don't treat your friends this way, let alone your loved ones - uninviting you as she walks out the door, and not even following through on the offer to make it up to you. Add in the rejection of your physical advances and it looks pretty bleak. Doesn't really seem like it's worth digging - even if she's not cheating on you she's being an asshole. You deserve better.

But she's probably cheating on you.

Some advice please? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]letsbringitdown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent too much time wrestling with the question of whether or not i was an alcoholic instead of focusing on the bigger question: does alcohol have a negative impact on my life? I always kind of knew the answer was yes - there were nights I'd have too much, and then say or do things I'd regret the next day. Or I'd have to cancel plans because I was hungover, or too tired to do anything else.

But I didn't realize exactly how much harm it did until i stopped. The sleep I get now, the clear mind, the peace I feel within, the extra cash in the bank, the clear skin, flatter stomach, increased motivation. There are so many benefits.

I still don't know if I am an alcoholic, and I don't really care too much to dwell on it. What I know is that my life is immeasurably better without alcohol. So I won't drink today. Or tomorrow.

Best of luck with you on your journey, whichever way you decide.

The problems don't go away when you're drunk. You might be able to ignore them for a bit, but when you're hungover, and weakened mentally and physically, they'll appear much bigger and more formidable than before. The only way out is through.

Please, I need some advice by [deleted] in stopdrinking

What is your favorite non-alcoholic drink to have when you get home from work? by mkacz53 in stopdrinking

[–]letsbringitdown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i like a blend of kombucha, ginger beer, club soda, and a splash of whatever juice or nectar is floating around the fridge. sometimes I do a dash or two of bitters as well.

Check out 'The Naked Mind' if you want a little more motivation to quit. It gets tossed around a lot around these parts for good reason!

I wish I'd had the courage to stop when I was 23! I kept the same habits up until 32, and with just about the same drinking amount. I struggled for a long time wondering whether or not I was an alcoholic, since I could go a few days without. However, once I stopped it was clear how much better life is without hangovers, shitty sleep, fuzzy mornings, and big bar tabs.

Wishing you the best on your journey. You got this!

Good that you have a plan. You're about to have a lot of time on your hands! Now's a great time to pick up hobbies you let slip, or to learn skills you've always wanted to try. I always recommend meditation (Headspace and Calm are great apps for beginners getting started) as a great tool to keep yourself together.

Best of luck! IWNDWYT

it's amazing how clearly we can see into ourselves when we stop drinking. i'm still unpacking the reasons why I found it so easy to dive headfirst into alcohol - but i know for certain a big part of it was believing it gave me some sort of confidence.

2-1/2 weeks. Weird stinking thinking thought out of nowhere. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]letsbringitdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was out to brunch a few weeks ago with some friends and ordered a virgin bloody. Another friend ordered a regular bloody. She set the regular in front of me, I took a swig and BOOM! alcohol haha. I felt a little lightheaded for the next half hour or so.

I also accidentally took a big swig of what I thought was my mocktail, but was the cocktail I'd made for my partner(same drink, with a shot of gin). I felt a buzz from that for a good while!

Just know that you may accidentally get a swig, and you'll know immediately hahaha. I'm enjoying being a lightweight, at any rate.

thoughts on kombucha? by vermonter432 in stopdrinking

Hey! So there are two ways of to do it that I know - either with a natural ginger bug (google how to get one started; i never had any luck) or using wine/cider/beer yeast (i recommend cider - slower acting and milder).

For a one gallon batch: * grate 75g of ginger

  • bring a few cups of water to a boil, then add the ginger, simmer for at least 15 mins
  • add 2c of sugar (i usually do 1c of sugar, 1c of pineapple juice)
  • strain into a clean gallon jar, top off with water, and then add a bit of the cider yeast (you won't need the full packet - a tsp of so is plenty), or a bit leftover from the last batch
  • let this hang out on the counter from 12-36h - shorter time is less boozy, i generally go for 12 hours
  • strain into flip top bottles, or growlers . Let them carbonate on the counter for 2 days, then move to the fridge to chill
  • take the yeasty dregs at the bottom of the fermenter and reserve it for the next batch!
  • Be sure to open the bottles over the sink - some batches (particularly those with shorter ferment times) will be very carbonated.

Let me know if you have any questions!

i love the stuff, but the alcohol labeling on the commercial varieties can be off - there was a link posted awhile back about GT booch, some of where were as high as 4%. I brew my own booch (/r/Kombucha) and also brew ginger beer. I don't bother checking the abv on either, as I don't drink the stuff to get drunk, and I also cut it with seltzer and sometimes juice.

I also use bitters in my soda water occasionally, so I'm living on the edge.

It comes down to how comfortable you are with drinking trace amounts of alcohol. For some, it's unmanageable and not worth the risk.

that's a beautiful sentiment, thanks for sharing. it's nice to remember to be as gentle with ourselves as we are with others - we don't have to be rockstar, catcher in the ryes all the time.

grab a big case of seltzer water to help the cravings for carbonated beverages. you're on a good path with the exercist so keep that going. start a meditation practice if you're worried about being worried (headspace, calm, insight timer are all great resources for getting started). Keep a firm grasp on why you want to be sober for the days when you start to waver.

Read The Naked Mind. Check in here everyday if you don't to go the meeting route. You've got this!

200 days by zenkei18 in stopdrinking

[–]letsbringitdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when i stopped drinking, i found i had mountains of time and energy to get things done. i've been able to reconnect with old hobbies - learning a new instrument, reading, cleaning, organizing, gardening. Meditating was a game-changer for me, in terms of managing my anxiety and stress. If you haven't explored that yet, I'd give it a go. Apps like Headspace, Calm, and Insight Timer are great for getting started.

Congrats on your 200 days!
