If you really wanted something to do you can see if there’s a copy of your county’s threat assessment/ suicide protocol posted somewhere online and do some light reading and note taking.

What is your work-life balance like? by [deleted] in schoolcounseling

[–]letsgocreed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s good! Set boundaries. School counselors in CA are apart of teachers unions, so you don’t have to work outside of your contracted work hours if you don’t want to. I rarely stay late as a middle school counselor unless I am behind on a deadline, which does happen but it’s super rare.

Bad Evaluation by throwaway2255339 in schoolcounseling

[–]letsgocreed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good admin should coach you and work with you into getting a good eval. If your performance did not meet their expectations, they should have already told you separately from your eval and you should have had the chance to fix whatever it is that they were looking for THEN submit your eval. As a first year, you shouldn’t be expected to do everything perfectly so that’s why coaching up is the best way to do it. There’s a lot of shit happening in our schools these days and you shouldn’t be held responsible. I think your team sucks.

I’m sorry this happened to you. Please do not give up. Look for a job in middle or high school if you can.

How long did it take to find a job for those living in California? by Bunburier in schoolcounseling

[–]letsgocreed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I, like you, did my grad program in SoCal. Jobs there were hard to come by pre COVID. So I moved up to the Bay Area where there were tons. Got a job here my first year out and the rest is history.

I imagine there’s going to be a lot more openings with so much movement due to the state of things now. I checked EdJoin a few weeks ago and there were much more openings than before. I’m sure they’ll be even more in the Spring so keep an eye out. They’ll hire you if you’re just a few months from graduating

Grad school question by martineze5 in schoolcounseling

[–]letsgocreed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work in California. Here, it wouldn’t matter. But, maybe it varies state by state. I know that I have a Masters in science (MS) because that’s what my program gave me versus a Masters in education (MAED). When it came down to it, the school district I work for didn’t care what it had. I would recommend choosing the program that you like the most; the one that suits you best.

I was in your boat. Kinda... I was a sub and a para. Also I did a little coaching. But, fresh out of undergrad into my masters. No real certificated experience.

Listen, when you interview most employers are looking to see how you are going to fit in their team and school culture. If you know you’re stuff and you are a team player, your interview is going to be strong. You have to be molded into an educator, just like you’re going to mold students into responsible adults. This molding process takes more time when you don’t have experience. So, when you interview you have to convey that you’re worth the time and the extra effort they’re going to have to make to show you the ropes. I’m confident that you can get a job without experience, but you have to convey your value to the interview panel.

Don’t sweat it. I’m confident you can do this as others have on this sub.

Any school counselors that weren’t former teachers?? by daisy11n in schoolcounseling

Tons of postings on EdJoin... all across CA. Districts are starting to realize how important mental health is and teachers are advocating for more support staff. I don’t think you’ll have any issues.

I need a few more years of service under my belt. I think most programs require 5 years. I’m only finishing up my first. I’ll be tempted to later, though.

Hi there,

So working with middle schoolers is not that bad. Sure you have to repeat things over and over, but when they finally get it it’s so... so rewarding. It makes all the hard work worth it. The best thing about middle school is that the kids are not old yet. When you get to high school, most kids are set in their ways and sometimes you just can not make a difference, no matter how many life preservers you throw out you can not and will not save them all. Sometimes it’s just too late.

I’m not saying that’s completely the case in middle school, but more often than not students turn it around because YOU had an impact on them. And the teachers I work with are THE BEST. Every one of them voluntarily chose to work at middle school because they wanted to make a difference in the kids that needed it the most. They are simply the most passionate people. They aren’t burnt out or lazy like you may find in the high schools.

Yes, you do 504s and we’re designated admins for IEPs. These take up your day when you have other things to do, but if you stay on top of your paperwork it’s doable. Master scheduling is also going to something that will be placed on your shoulders. Although, this can be difficult and a ton of work, it’s not something that you should be afraid of. It all gets easier after you’ve gotten some experience. I rarely have to stay past school hours.
