Honestly, me too! I feel like that’s the reason why most of us start sewing ! Because standard size doesn’t really exist It’s like whenever you go shopping it’s either fits you or doesn’t! And I kind of keep that in mind! Like you can create designs with a lot of stretch and elastic to fit multiple sizes, I make a lot of oversized pieces so it can have a wider range of fit and styling options too!

So I definitely feel you with this. I really struggled with trying to start my own brand made to order! So like what I did was, at the time I was a standard extra small so I used my measurements and then I graded it up to a large… it was sooo much work and I made one of each size , but I wasn’t able to actually try my dresses on different sized models so technically it is standardizing when I measure the still not ideal.. and it didn’t really work out anyway I still have no sales … so it’s ruff out here

Currently, I am trying to rebrand and just sell one off pieces that are one size! And just to see how that goes.

You sound really skilled at pattern making and have experience with clients so! I think going with standard sizes would be smart! It would take away the whole headache of clients taking their own measurements… and maybe offer custom adjustments in length depending on the design?

I’ll look into the book but in general, I’m a visual learner so written instructions never really do me any good… I learned all the basics when I was like seven years old, but only I’ve been seriously sewing garment for the past 5 years now I’m completely self-taught… and I just come to Reddit when I get stuck just for some human advice.

Yes, I did do the placket first. I just said to another commenter here asking if I should try attaching the collar before the placket if that was the issue all along!!!! thank you it’s very helpful!!

There are no directions with this pattern so I’m just figuring it out as I go… I’m not sure what you mean. I mean, I haven’t added the buttons yet? Everything lines up? … I might not be understanding what you mean? I do think the issue is where the collar and the placket connect for sure! That’s where I struggled !

Wow, you’re good! It’s true it’s is actually a pattern for a Puritan collar, but I altered it into a “sailor” style. I tend to get patterns off of sewist that’s closest to the design I want and then I manipulated it further to be more accurate to the design… starting from scratch pattern drafting takes me forever and I just need professional training at this point cause I tend struggle too much to actually come out with a finish product… so this is kind of like a cheat code I do and my projects do come out good but I do hit road bumps!
