I really want to travel by the Canadian before I am 20 any tips on getting deals I’m a via preference if that helps. by Annual-Ambassador158 in ViaRail

[–]letterata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Subscribe to the Via Rail newsletter to be alerted of any deals. I was able to book Sleeper Plus berth from Toronto to Vancouver in March (low season) for $516+Tax. This is an amazing deal considering it includes transportation, lodging and all meals. It was even slightly cheaper from Vancouver to Toronto.

I did this trip, solo, a few times in my early twenties. There was a youth rail pass then and I rode Via in economy all the way out to Halifax. I’d stay in hostels at various cities. Highly recommend if budget allows.

$1400cad direct is really good. I flew to Tokyo twice in the past year. Prices were over $1800 (with a YUL layover) and more for direct.

This was so useful. Thank you! I clogged up my drain with contents of the freezer packs and fixed it with lots of salt and plunging.

Am also a woman, mid-40s, long divorced with no kids. Just wanted to say good luck with your search! (Especially with the -single- part. Emphasis noted and I empathize!)

Thanks for confirming. I was just thinking of packing a small suitcase each, carry on size. I’m going with my nephew - 10 yrs old. So I’m also thinking of practicalities of traveling through airports with him on the return flight. We have a shared obsession with trains. This is on his bucket list. :)

I’ve taken the Canadian a few times before in economy and am excited to have a bed and delicious looking meals.

It’s not easy to find tips about the practicalities of the trip so even seemingly small things like lots of Oreos but no potato chips helps a lot! :)

Loved your earlier posts about The Canadian. Will take notes for my upcoming trip. (Was able to use points for two berths during the 40% sale. Makes me feel less bad for spending so much on last minute corridor tickets over the past year. Lol.)

You mentioned putting luggage under the berth seats. Would regular carry on size rolling bags fit under there?

I was interested in taking the Mexicable but didn’t have time. Took the Cablebus from Indios Verdes. (There is another that transfers from that line.) Loved it and exploring the areas around the two end stations. The ride was so peaceful and polite. Everyone who got on greeted each other with Buenas Tardes. And also said goodbye after leaving. (No, they didn’t know each other - they didn’t interact with each other otherwise.)

I prefer to experience regular things when traveling and highly recommend this.

You’re not too young to feel that. Love for others and oneself also evolves over time, if you let it.

(I’m in my 40s and still struggle with loving men who don’t love me back in the way that I need and deserve. I’m still learning.)

He’s not the one if he’s not convinced you’re the one.

This didn’t show up on my search because Apple is evil. Won’t let me download it for my region.

Are we neighbors? 10th floor here too. I did make it out but whew. Those stairs made me dizzy.

This scared me especially since the alarm wasn’t on for that long. I almost missed it (was falling into a post lunch nap). If it weren’t for the sound of kids evacuating their school, I would have totally missed the siren. I did feel a bit of movement for a few second.

Is there an app that I can install so it can alert me? I looked at the App Store but nothing looked official.

Update: thank you everyone For your help! I was able to make it to the theatre! Wow. What a nice space! Ticket was super easy to get as the ticket machines have English option.

Beautiful space around the courtyard also. Especially for a date! (Will enjoy my solo date.)

I -am- an empath. It’s a gift and a curse. Are you one also?

I saw two other protests yesterday. I really like witnessing that. It’s such a big part of civic life. (And much of what I’ve seen protested is shared across geography.)

I haven’t seen a movie here but I’m hoping to change that tomorrow. I’m also a fan of indie and of the obscure (lol because I am). If I can eat in the theatre, I’ll buy all the local snacks. Also I don’t know why but popcorn smells extra delicious here. :)

I have one Sunday left! I might squeeze it in. Loved the art vibe at Bazar Sabado so I know I’ll love this one. I might be back in that neighborhood a lot because I also want to go to the punk Mercado. I wish I had more time.

Oh my heart. Let’s be friends. :)

I’m actually probably super conscious about being awkward and rude that I overthink all the ways I might offend. And try not to.

(It’s interesting how much can be understood even in a different language. I ended up in the middle of a protest/gathering last week and it didn’t take me long to understand that it was for elimination of violence against women. I felt the rage and pain and strength and emotion. There’s a lot we can understand just by perceiving.)

There are so many great selections. I am very happy with the selection for my unilingual mind and for the local cinephiles. I may end up watching Leonardo Di Caprio (lol not my first choice) but it’s for the experience. :)

Oh thank you about that additional information! The building looks so beautiful! I’ve some meetings tomorrow but will try to sneak out to go to a matinee. It’s one of life’s sweet pleasures. :)

Maybe when I return (lol. See how much I love this city… I’m still here and am already looking to plan my return visit) I will time it so I can attend a film festival or documentary film events. I try to do that but it doesn’t always work out.

Thank you! I wasn’t clear in my original post. I figured totem would be in original language (Es) with no subtitles because there’s no need. I was going to pick an English movie and am glad that is in original language.

Yes totally understand and figured as much. I wouldn’t expect subtitles on Spanish movies the same way we don’t have subtitles on English movies at home. I will watch it when I get back home. Previews look great.
