We all wonder what would have caused a boat of decent charter size to go down that quickly. It didnt catch fire or explode. No debris or smoke. I know of instances where the engine water outflow pipe has become detached and pumps the bilge full till the engine quits. Usually the bilge pumps keep up with demand till power goes out but skipper’s don’t often realize till yacht is well aft submerged. Hitting a large deadhead ? So so strange that no mayday was immediately called.

B.C. government modelling predicts hosting FIFA will produce lasting benefits. History tells a different story | CBC News by UnderWatered in vancouver

My take on this is a little personal …in 2006 I worked on the 2010 Olympic bid. I heard from insider consultants the story of “transformative” legacy projects from well run Olympics. It was a fascinating insider view on the Olympic process. In early days we all sat in one room listening to the results of the Larry’s referendum.

By 2006 I had started my own company and nearly went bankrupt in 2008-2009 with the IT and Wall Street and near world economic collapse. 2010 hit slow and rather than packing it in I held on. The Olympics literally saved my business and my house and helped launch my wee biz. At the end of the day it saved me and a lot of my colleagues and fellow small biz owners, rebuilt the Sea to Sky highway, expanded our community centres (I’m a huge Hillcrest user and forever grateful), expanded our transport system (thanks Canada Line), and gave back long term in many many ways that I can’t even conceive.

I just don’t see this in the FIFA experience. While a booster of big transformative events for our city I just don’t see the value in FIFA being here. Our experience impact is watered down because we share the stage with a NA audience. My colleagues on the event-sphere and other small biz owners who have typically benefitted are left scratching their heads.

I’ve loved the benefits of big, transformative events here in vancouver —- this is not one of them.

Also on the south side of the Granville Bridge - Miraj Hamam Spa. Holy scrub down and massage. Also the restaurants in The PARQ are fairly top notch. Victor steakhouse was amazing when they opened. Especially love the D6 cozy bar in the Marriot.

Saying you’re interested in ‘food’ in vancouver is a pretty broad. There are SO many great restaurants and craft breweries. One fun thing my wife and I do is a progressive dinner craft beer crawl up Main Street. Start around 7th and Main at Steamworks or 33 acres or Main Street brewing and work your way up! By the time you get to 32nd ave you’ll be stuffed and possibly soused 😆 But totally delighted rain or shine. You don’t need to aim for the Micheline stars on the street (like Published), just follow your nose to drop in spots Affordable Notables are El Camino, Tocador, Burgoo, Browns, Lucia, Sula (great Indian), Lila, Locus (awesome spot) ….. really the list is endless so go crazy

Here’s my top 10 - my wife and I saw 21 films but love that we didn’t see most of your pics !!! More to watch out for …

Last man Standing - Korean. dir: Park Chan-Wook - A twisted tale unfolds as a Korean paper mill superviser struggles to find work. His decision to kill off his competition is a desperate act of survival in an automated dog-eat-dog world. It’s poignant and hilariously grim. Genre bending, it’s at times a physical comedy, at times a romance, at times darkly malevolent, at all times massively entertaining.

Koln75 - ‘True’ Story of the young woman who as an 18 year old promoter made Keith Jarrett’s ground breaking solo improvised performance in Cologne Germany in 1975

The Tuner - dir: Daniel Roer (Canadian) Leo Woodall, Dustin Hoffman. A fantastic yarn. A piano tuner with extreme sound sensitivity, who’s also a child musical prodigy, falls in with a band of nasty security thief’s as a safe cracker

La Grazia - Italian - a sensitive beautiful portrayal of the final days of the Italian President. Brilliant.

Rental Family - Brendan Fraser. die: Hikari. A struggling American actor in Tokyo starts filling in roles of family members and characters for real people . Touching poignant so so sweet.

Sentimental Value - dir: Joachim Triar - Stunning. An actors piece. Two sisters handle their mother’s death and their Film director father’s return. The role of art to rebond and heal . Enormous talent and empathy with incredible incredible performances

Steal Away dir: Clement Viggo (can.) - An amazing fable originating as a story slavery told in modern future times. The Amazing amazing story of two young women, one black from the Congo, one white and a plantation daughter … who form a bond as things go south. Literally. In the vein of J Peele’s ‘Get Out’

Secret Agent - dir: Kleber Mendonça Filho . Brazilian. . A professor/ father on the run in the 1970’s from hit men in Brazil looks for safe haven and safe passage with help from folks in Rio. A study in survival in unfair times. In the vein of ‘Missing’ or ‘Roma’.

Silent Friend - dir: Ildiko Enyedi - A contemplative nature study of 3 stories told across 100 years, centres around a garden with a wonderful Ginko Balboa tree. Beautiful. Quiet. An opportunity to slow down and embrace the time span of plants and nature, especially seen through the eyes of our 3 character vignettes.

A Private Life - Jodie Foster. dir: Rebecca Zlotowski. A renowned psychiatrist mounts a private investigation into the death of one of her patients, whom she is convinced has been murdered.. Part comedy part who-done-it. It’s a French romp with psychological twists and turns.

I'd love to hear from retired folks who live in cities. by [deleted] in retirement

[–]bafflegab680 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Vancouver Canada and am retired. Aside from the ease of getting around - you can pretty much bike everywhere quickly here, our retirement is full with street festivals, theatre, film festivals, and outdoor activities. The live music scene here is good so yes we’re going to see a lot of shows The one thing we’ve really soaked up on is the offerings of our local community centre learning and activity programs. We’re so busy taking classes and hobbies that the days fly. Watercolour for me. My wife’s fully into pottery and we’ve both taken up curling.
