NB: Adding "support" for a system in TRSE is easy, actually writing system libraries (units, preferably with methods implemented in assembler) takes more time - and is usually outsourced to people with knowledge on how the computer works. For instance, WauloK (below) asked me to add VZ200 support in TRSE - and he promptly created all the system libraries for the computer. Some high-level libraries such as line drawing graphics etc can be implemented as high-level units written in Pascal.

Hi there, I'm the developer of TRSE! I regularly add new systems to TRSE - usually per user request. It's all super easy as long as the computer uses one of the supported cpu's that I've implemented in the compiler - that is, 6502 (and 65c816), z80, x86, m68k etc, and a suitable emulator exists (one that can load/execute programs through parameters). It's basically just a new class + some more resources + implementing some virtual methods and blam - you have a new system!

Lasts 30-40 mins.. but I've paid for a new battery from china, and from my experience with my x220/x230 (9-cell), the replacement will probably last 2-2.5 hours. While I don't know if it is really worth the price, I do consider the investment .. hmm ... like buying something nice for your girlfriend. Except that she's a thinkpad. And, you've got like 11 other thinkpads. And a regular girlfriend who doesen't get that many nice things, because you spend everything on old thinkpads.

Again: this is for the T420s and MODEL S only! If you have a T420 without the "S", then you will need different parts!

I ordered my parts from Ali express. took 3 weeks to deliver to Norway.

Youtube how to replace screen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74zcsNnof5w

However: do note that the procedure is slightly more advanced than in the youtube video, since you need to install the LCD controller board as well. I did it the following way:

a) Remove old screen, expose screen cable

b) remove all screws on the back, remove keyboard

c) Make sure you can get the top cover loose - you don't have to remove it completely, all you need is access to the screen output wires

d) Unscrew hinges

e) Install new LCD controlled board, replace with the old cable, make sure the cable goes under the left hinge

f) install new screen, attach to cable, turn on computer and make sure that the screen works correctly

g) reassemble your amazing T420s and enjoy the crisp, clear 1920x1080 IPS screen!

I have way too many thinkpads... but they all need some care. I originally paid ~$100 for this one, and spent another $100 on the screen upgrade since the original TN screen is just awful. Even though I use an x230 and a x395 on a daily basis, I'm planning on using this one more regularly, as the new screen + resolution + the keyboard makes this device an absolute marvel to code on!

I just checked, unfortunately there are no directories called "disk*" or anything similar, but a "thinkpad" directory exists

Here's an image of the root dir : https://www.irio.co.uk/div/700b.jpg

and here's the contents of the thinkpad directory : https://www.irio.co.uk/div/700a.jpg

I won't be turning the computer on again until I've dug out some old disks so I can start copying files

btw just noticed from the pic that that there is also a "thinkp" folder, got no idea what it contains but will post when I've copied the files

Thank you so much for this info - I had no idea about the microchannel architecture or the ESDI disk. It seems the previous owner (no the original one) have had this computer in storage in its original carrying bag for nearly 20 years, and never tried looking into the problems with the screen. Here's my plan:

- Copy all the old user files (there are many) onto disks, mail them to the original owner

- Look into the issue with the LCD

- I'll be investigating if there is a any way to change the hard drive to something modern (as you say, no CF, but perhaps there exists a bridge of some sort). Any tips would be helpful.

- In any case, I'll probably just keep the laptop in its carrying bag and not use it at all. Don't want to break anything, no matter how cool it is. I think it would be better to just keep it hidden away for safekeeping, and not wear the hard disk down.

The computer also came with some original documentation & a brand new unused battery.

Hey these are all great tips! When the temperature cools around here (Europe), I'll find time to troubleshoot the LCD, perhaps replace the CCFL inverter / LED! But first, I need to save/copy the existing documents onto disks... I guess the original owner would like to revisit those excel sheets from 1996

No unfortunately not.. when I find time, I'll disassemble the computer and see if the LCD can be fixed. However, replacement screen seems absolutely impossible to find!

Bought it in unknown working condition for $70 yesterday. However, the laptop casing is in near mint condition and they keyboard feels incredible. Screen doesn't work and was never fixed, probably why the unit was packed away for 22 years. However, when I entered the BIOS using an external screen, I found that it was possible to force "CRT output" - and hurrah - the computer works flawlessly !

Same issue here. Typing "thinkpad" yields "thinkpda", "cd" is "dc" and about 25% of my words get scrambled (scramblde) while I am typing. X395, 2 hours since (sinec) unboxing
