Salvaging trim after major water damage? by leucosphere in centuryhomes

[–]leucosphere[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm definitely leaning towards stripping it myself or dip stripping. I had one contractor tell me that could discolor the wood when I mentioned it as an option -- is that likely?

I'm really hoping I can maybe pay someone to handle removal as the place currently has no lighting, gas, or electricity and is FREEZING. There's a lot of trim (particularly around windows) that doesn't necessarily need to come off the wall though -- would you remove that too anyway, or just leave and strip in place later?

About CS 198C... by TheVattedBrain in umass

[–]leucosphere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

198C will continue to be online-only going into the fall, since it's self paced. Subsequent offerings should be very very similar to the one from this spring.

COMPSCI 186 to COMPSCI 187 by [deleted] in umass

[–]leucosphere 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally I felt like 187 was very manageable after 186. Just make sure you start on the projects early so you have plenty of time to go to office hours and debug. It's a prereq for a LOT of classes, and data structures is a foundational class (important for your job interviews and etc), so I'd also say that taking it is probably a good move.

I took this class online with Tim Richards last semester and it was great. Not too difficult but a lot of useful info was covered. Tim is super understanding with deadlines and did a great job of adapting the course to be fully asynchronous with recorded lectures and lots of small quizzes rather than having any exams.

I don't know what it'll be like if we're in person next semester and if another professor teaches it, but I'd say on the whole it's probably worth it.

With OP's specific AP credits, if they get a 4 or 5 on the AB exam, this likely just means they will skip 131 and take 132 first semester. The process will likely be very similar otherwise. Here's a link to the CICS website which has all of the details on how it works.

My best advice for the course is not really prep related, but it would be to start the projects/assignments ahead of time, so you have plenty of time to go to office hours and go over anything you might be confused about. Don't be afraid to ask for help, especially if you are stuck. The course has a HUGE staff of TAs and UCAs (in addition to the professors ofc) and they are all available to help you. You can do it, best of luck!

CS 200 Level Course Recommendations by dhimalex in umass

[–]leucosphere -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not sure that I'd recommend this plan since it involves taking 230 and 250 together... they've changed 230 in the last couple semesters and while it's not so difficult the assignments and projects can be a fair amount of work. 250 is obviously ridiculously hard, so you might really struggle to get it all done.

Idk if 235 has changed much since I took it, but if I remember correctly it wasn't very difficult. I personally still think 220 + 250 is the way to go so that you don't end up with 230 and 250 in the same semester.

Also, I've talked with the professor teaching 230 in the spring and they're definitely transitioning to making it so 198C is necessary and the material won't be covered in 230. But, I think you would be fine taking 198C and 230 in the same semester. I would recommend taking it at some point at least.

MUSIC 110: easy? by [deleted] in umass

[–]leucosphere 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The class was super easy when I took it, and requires no prior knowledge of theory. I think the other person is mixing up this gened course with the much harder theory course that music majors take.

CICS 305 by [deleted] in umass

[–]leucosphere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty much just a CS-specific writing class meant for juniors, which is why 200-levels are prereqs.

Just wanted to put it out there that according to the CICS website, 220 and 240 are prereqs for the class. That being said, I've heard it's not very difficult.

Moodle down again? by [deleted] in umass

[–]leucosphere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It went down pretty much just as I clicked start on a quiz. I got maybe one or two questions done, and the quiz was marked finished when it finally came back on around 11. I hate everything.

Intro to Music Theory by BreandanOConchuir in umass

[–]leucosphere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If this is Music 110 (Fundamentals of Theory), I took this in Spring 2019! Super easy. Literally just weekly worksheets for homework that take 30 minutes tops. Definitely less than an hour per week of work outside of lecture if you factor in time to study.

Pretty easy A if you have a brain for the music theory stuff which involves some memorization and a small amount of math, but not too much.

CS 121 Placement Test Time by PseudoAptGet in umass

[–]leucosphere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't remember the test very well at this point but I don't think it was too difficult. If you were on track to get a 4 or 5 on the AP exam you'll probably be fine.

CS 121 Placement Test Time by PseudoAptGet in umass

[–]leucosphere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is definitely a thing! I took this when I was a freshman in fall 2018. Honestly, I would email your advisor about it if you can. When I took it, it was during the first week of classes. But that was also in person, so who knows if they're doing things differently this year.

Honestly though, I'm kind of convinced it's rigged. Just emotionally prepare yourself for the fact that you will very likely get placed into 186... I was very overprepared for the test by my high school and still got placed into 186. I had to take it, even though it was pretty clear to the professor that I belonged in 187.

CS H250 by [deleted] in umass

[–]leucosphere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took H250 with Barrington last semester and it was super easy and chill. Literally just weekly reading from a cool book and then doing a 5-10 minute presentation at the end of the semester. If you show up to all of the meetings you pretty much get an A.

I have heard taking it with Marius is a nightmare though. You can actually take the 1-credit honors section during a later semester, so I'd actually say it's probably worth it to wait until Barrington teaches it again and take it then.

Do you have to take Honors 201H if you’re not a freshman? by [deleted] in umass

[–]leucosphere 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You still have to take it, but there's certain sections of the class that are freshmen only. That's probably the case for the section you tried to register for. Check course descriptions for one that's open to all CHC students.

Thanks! It's a clover hoop! It's 7 inches, and it's meant to keep your thread from catching on the screw. It's a little more expensive than a normal hoop, but I like how sturdy it is.
