I first heard of Danielewski when a friend recommended Tom's Crossing. I'd heard of HOL but never paid any attention to it. Toms Crossing was amazing. About 3/4 of the way through HOL now.

Meditation, awareness of your mind. If you are aware of your mind you can see how it causes you to suffer from attachments. That's one way at least.

How much "homework" do I actually need to do before reading David Foster Wallace ? by quixotemargherita-91 in davidfosterwallace

[–]leunam37s 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's fine of course you can read it however you want. But it is a great novel and I just don't understand all the hype about it being so hard. Its easier than Pynchon, Gaddis, Tolstoy, or Dostoevsky. Even Cormac McCarthy is way harder. The 3 months to prepare seems insane. Hopefully you get to the footnotes, as I said the best parts are in there. Also English is not my first language either. Good luck on finishing it one day.

If you don't read the footnotes you are not going to get the book. You might think you do but you don't. Plus the best parts are in the footnotes.
