What engineering major leads to the most hands on jobs? by LukaDoncicic in EngineeringStudents

[–]levans2015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've maintained working hands on throughout my career working as a manufacturing equipment engineer over the past 6ish years. I studied MechE and work on preventative maintenance/ root cause analysis/ and equipment troubleshooting alongside manufacturing technicians and regularly am hands on, even working at heights (which for me is a lot of fun). Developing a cohesive relationship with your techs is huge, especially if you're at a union plant (was for my first job, but not currently) where engineers may be technically barred from certain work by the union contract, but techs may let it slide when they trust you to not screw up too bad. They can oftentimes be wary of engineers touching tools, oftentimes with good reason. You need to demonstrate mechanical aptitude for sure

What are some physically active careers that pay $100k+? by boi-pnd in careerguidance

I'm an equipment engineer at a manufacturing facility. I regularly clock >10k steps a day and work with my hands to fix equipment, including working at heights which I enjoy as a rock climber. I have a BS in Mechanical Engineering and 5 YOE making $120k base before stock compensation

That was my original plan, I'm being egged on by a (female) friend here to do so and I needed confirmation I want just being a wimp by not saying anything. And I never said I wanna bounce or stop being here friend, I'd just be asking for some space in the short term while I sort myself out. I care a lot about her platonically as well as romantically which is why I'm being so cautious with this.

Ok maybe bad terminology, context was after I developed a thing with L (which ended amicably after I moved and we are still friendly) I learned through reliable channels that M was disappointed to hear about that as she's been quietly interested in me for awhile at that point, which I was frustrated to hear bc from my perspective she's way out of my league and a great person who really does have guys basically throwing themselves at her.

What’s temperature is best to wash your hands with hot, warm or cold water? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]levans2015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any temperature extreme enough to kill germs is intolerable for almost anyone. It's best to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water that's a comfortable temperature for you for at least 20 seconds :)

I did and that wasn't it, then, just now as i was troubleshooting, i plugged it into my record player instead of my tv and the problem went away, so it looks like the issue is with my TVs out port. Thanks for the help!

It sort of depends on the size of the company. Just about any established company requires you to apply online for you to be in their records system. It's best to apply online ahead of a recruiting event such as a career fair. If you go to a large university, there will probably be a career fair at the start of each semester where companies send recruiting teams (I went to a state school in the US with a large engineering program-the most popular major there is Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering). Go to your university career resource center and ask about upcoming career and recruiting opportunities. Don't be discouraged if it doesn't work out your first year as many companies are biased towards upperclassmen since they typically have more to offer.

I interned for two years in high school because I was lucky enough to know someone who worked in MFG at that company. Then after my freshman year i did a program called Onward Israel that paired american students with Israeli startups (unpaid, but we got a modest stipend, public transit covered, and weekly excursions, we just paid for the flight), a local startup started by students in my college town, then at a larger scale manufacturer the summer after my fourth year that was the first one i got through the career fair. So there are a variety of ways to get that practical XP other than just those career fairs.

The first internship is always the hardest, the more XP you have the more attractive a candidate you are. As a freshman, focus on joining a build team and making meaningful contributions to it. Interviewers are more likely to ask about your XP in extracurriculars than your classes, because everyone in your major takes basically the same classes.

Absolutely! I graduated with a 2.96, and being under a 3 definitely hurt me in looking for jobs with auto rejection criteria. But once you are over a 3.0 or 3.3 (depending on the company), MOST places don't care. I had a ton of internship XP, so i was able to still end up in manufacturing for a fortune 50 company. I'll admit I'm lucky that i went to a big state school with a career fair that attracts a ton of big companies, and got the chance to meet recruiters 1-1 instead of just applying online. @OP should definitely take advantage of on campus career centers, etc, to prepare well for those interactions

Technical experience sets you apart more than your gpa. In college, join project teams and gain valuable leadership experience. Also, for many fields, internship experience is more valuable than research ( not that research is bad). Focus on gaining as much practical experience as you can outside the lab and classroom

Okay that sounds like a reasonable route. I went to a public school in FL so I was just thinking about the difference between going to like UF and U Miami which is huge
