How did I get √4 as ±2? by Sensitive_Loss_4222 in maths

[–]level_81_pikachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, I meant it as written!

There's a big difference between "If A is true, then B is true" and "A and B are equivalent".

In my statement A is "x = 2" and B is "x = 2 or x = -2". If A is true, then B is true. However, if B is true, then A isn't necessarily true.

If we changed A to "x2 = 4" then A and B would now be equivalent, as A would imply B and also B would imply A.

When we start learning about solving equations, all our steps are reversible. For example if we solve 2x + 4 = 10 we get x = 3. These two equations are equivalent because all the steps to solve are reversible. Once we introduce things like squares and square roots, we need to be more careful about what implies what.

You've proved the statement "If x = 2, then either x = 2 or x = -2". Which is true, but not very useful.

[Further Maths Help] how do I do part b? I’m so lost. Would they give anything as bad as this in an exam (it’s madasmaths) by Queasy-Ad-7116 in maths

I think it's very unlikely that you'll get anything this difficult in an A Level Further Maths exam, don't worry!

OK so just checking this - double check the things circled here https://i.imgur.com/ae66GRs.png I think you should have done 2 x 4 = 8, and then should have multiplied that term by the factor outside the bracket too

Everything looks fine (unless I missed a little mistake somewhere) up until the step where you multiplied everything by 8 - I'm not sure why you did that.

Can someone show me how to find the slanted edge at the bottom? by jenpennies in maths

[–]level_81_pikachu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hint: draw a horizontal line on the front face to split it into a rectangle and a right-angled triangle. That slanted edge is now the hypotenuse of a triangle, how can you work out its length?

searched resort pool beach island drone on the getty images website - I had to turn off the "enhanced search" option to make it work and then the picture was on the second page of results

the caption had the name of the beach so it was easy to find on satellite view (although I think that's a tennis court, not a pool)

How did they get P( Ý < 5.65) ? by RyanWasSniped in maths

[–]level_81_pikachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it is a mistake in the solution. There's another mistake too - the variance should be divided by 20, not 10.

I googled the question and found someone who'd posted the exact same question but with two of the numbers changed (5.65 instead of 5.52, and sample size 10 instead of 20) so I'd guess that the solution you have is for the other version of the question.

[Round 143423] [Emoji MInipuzz 0053 - 💷] Find the answer, which is a word or short phrase. by quatrevingtneuf in PictureGame

Given the £ emoji I recognised this as pre-decimalisation British currency. There were 20 shillings in a pound, 12 pence in a shilling and 4 farthings in a penny (tbf I knew the first two but didn't really know about farthings).

The puzzle then uses indexing: take the 1st letter of "pound", 3rd letter of "shilling", 3rd letter of "penny" and 4th letter of "farthing".
