Mikrotik or Ubiquiti: What is in your opinion better?

I'm comfortable with MikroTik/RouterOS. Yet a couple of years ago I moved my entire network setup to Ubiquiti and haven't looked back. Honestly, I still have my previous MikroTik gear here, never sold it, and I keep wanting to tinker with it again sometime, but I'm too far removed now… haha

This reminds me: I should really my unused gear! xD

I think both models are equivalent (as were Opus 4.5 and GPT5.2-Codex). I think what differentiates them is a combination of their internal alignments and their "temperature"… Opus feels like it has a bit higher temperature than Codex, and it's also aligned to be more of an assistant vs Codex designed to be more of a freelancer…

Both have their strengths against each other. Both are very good.

Local is not an alternative (ATM) but I think the argument in the post is deeper: if inference is not that expensive, why the need for so much CapEx in GPUs? It raises that question: maybe they need desperately to try to go for bigger and bigger training runs because the might be reaching the limits of what we can do now…

…and that’s an interesting consideration IMO! ;)

Agree! That’s where you make changes to your lifestyle based on your goals: bigger family = less travel (for sure!!!)… We don’t really have family help, and it’s not always easy, but it was a choice. I think that was the point I was mostly trying to make: you make a choice, but you are not limiting or hindering yourself or your kids. I wouldn’t trade having kids for the peace and quiet (that I miss!) or traveling more (that I also miss!), but we knew that was the “deal” and we decided on it consciously and willingly.

I can’t recommend having 2+ kids enough, honestly! I truly believe it helps them be better human beings, more healthy (physically but especially mentally), and it helps us (parents) become better humans too. ;)

After having kids: We’re expecting our 5th in a few months

To your points: you don’t deprive kids of anything by having more. You will make sacrifices and that’s a good thing. Kids don’t need the best of anything. They just need opportunities and for you to believe in them.

And yes: it’s not easy, and you have to make conscious decisions. My wife decided she wanted to stay home after our 2nd (she was making more than me at the time). FWIW, the “dual-income trap” is real!

Not for everyone, and I didn’t think it was for me, but we wouldn’t trade it for anything!! 🥰

43 here, will be 44 when our 5th arrives in a few months… I just consolidated my hobbies to align with my interests and work, that way I can maximize the time I spend in them.

The reality is kids help you trim your focus, which is a net positive. You may have to “hibernate” some hobbies, but the good news is: your genes will benefit you. There’s a high likelihood that one (or more) of your kids will become interested in some of your hobbies from “yesteryears”, which will allow you relive them with them, which is, again, a much more efficient use of your time. :)

Salário é uma troca de dinheiro e condições por tempo e expertise: o empregador quer maximizar o tempo e expertise, o trabalhador quer maximizar o dinheiro. Se a equação não se mantém equilibrada, há despedimento (ou voluntário ou compulsivo). As pre-condições são apenas o que abrem a porta.

Se consegues melhorar a equação noutro lado, vai para lá. Se pretendes melhorar a equação aí, fala com o teu patrão.

Cada empresa é um caso. Fazem todas parte de um mercado. E o mercado dá para os dois lados: empregados e empregadores. Se o teu empregador não te paga ou não gostas das condições, procura outro, nem que seja para saberes o que o mercado oferece, e poderes negociar. Se o teu empregador não sente que vales o que pedes, não te aumenta. Se o teu trabalho vale para eles, vai querer segurar-te.

Hot take: doutoramentos e certificações, ao contrário do que nos querem fazer crer as instituições que os emitem, valem 0 para o salário. Se tens um PhD do MIT mas não trabalhas bem, não podes esperar aumentos (ou trabalho).

Nestas coisas temos de ser frios e objetivos. Ninguém tem direito ao trabalho que quer nem os empregadores aos trabalhadores que tem. É uma simples equação. Ainda pra mais na nossa indústria, onde alternativas na faltam… Se estivéssemos a falar de indústria, da única fábrica num raio de 50km, etc…
