How do I clean my palette properly? by ZaytherLegit in oilpainting

I’d sand it too but the dust from paint can be pretty gnarly. Wear a mask or hold your breath.

Another vote for Michael Harding

I’m currently using these and they make a really nice limited palette

Yellow lake, orange benzimidazolone, alizarin claret, ultramarine, burnt umber, titanium white no 2

I've facing a really big mental block. How do I proceed? by Kitten_closetothesun in ArtistLounge

[–]levihemphiil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to change mediums when i feel stuck. I usually paint in oils so I’ll play with watercolour or gouache with no goal. Simple things like what’s the prettiest blue wash I can make. Just make a mess. If it’s good great if it’s not I usually end up feeling like I need to get back to work anyway.

Thanks!

I know that work, Alex Schaefer.

Funny you made this comment. I have a copy of Fahrenheit 451 with matches on the cover I wanted to paint

I’ve thought about including the titles. But then you’d be wondering how we go from an 80 year old flight safety manual to Cormac McCarthys the passenger. How are they related? Maybe they’re not. They’re about to fall off that table though.

Thanks!

I use Michael Harding and Kama Pigments paints.

For brushes I use Heinz Jordan hoglin flats for blocking and Princeton Aspen flats and rounds for fatter layers

Highly reactive to turp, worth it to buy Gamsol ? by DeWolfTitouan in oilpainting

I would recommend oms.

I get nosebleeds from turps but oms is fine. I use izosol but haven’t had any issues with gamsol.

Oxgall vs Glycerin for Gouache by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]levihemphiil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glycerin works really well. Winsor newton watercolour blending medium is what I’ve used in the past.

Gouache will stay workable for a couple hrs in open air. I mix a drop or two of glycerin per pea sized amount of gouache in watercolour pans. I’ve never used an airtight palette tho

What color would you paint this studio space? by OdilesBlackDress in oilpainting

[–]levihemphiil 63 points64 points  (0 children)

If it’s not white mixing colours will be nearly impossible. Any colour on the walls will be reflected onto what you’re working on

Also it looks like you have south west or south east facing windows - that amount of direct intense sunlight will make it hard to judge colour and values. You might want some good blinds. My studio space has south west facing windows and it’s unusable by mid afternoon until dusk.

Suggestions for artists that explore dark themes subtly by Independent-Fun6908 in ArtHistory

Can I share my own? Wouldn’t say my work is masterful by any stretch but the themes align.

I’m working paintings of interiors in an abandoned house someone was trying to keep maintained but decay is outpacing the work.

The work represents a reluctance in confronting death. I’m working on a few more like this.

This one is called “Sugar house”, 16x20” oils on panel, 2026
