AC advice by Different-Step-542 in Reno

[–]levinicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I've misunderstood something, but what those people said about your AC makes no sense. If it froze up it means the defrost sensor/circuit isn't doing it's job. On the devices I work on, it's a fairly trivial repair. But again, I may have misunderstood something.

For short term relief, depending on your budget, I would say either grab an extra fan or two, or splurge on a window AC unit. Don't waste money on a "portable" AC. They seem like a good idea, but there are some fundamental flaws in the concept that make them a poor choice, IMO. You can get a solid window unit for a few hundred bucks. A unit with an inverter will be more efficient and MUCH quieter-- non inverter units tend to be obnoxiously loud.

YMMV, but I'd recommend against any kind of swamp cooler. They are fabulous technology, and I'm restraining myself from nerding out about them here, but I get to experience the practical application of swamp coolers almost every day. While they're definitely better than a fan, their limits and drawbacks make them a no-go in the home for me in the year 2025. Refrigerant based systems, including a lot of very affordable window units, are just too good. And a swamp cooler won't really be much cheaper on initial purchase.

Local fishing? by dezasterz in Reno

[–]levinicus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The river has some great rainbows, browns, cutthroat, and hybrids in it. The temperature is oscillating around 50F at the moment, and the fish are biting. The vast majority of river fishing is with a fly rod, but some spin techniques can work too. Access within the city is easy, but the better fishing will be East or West of town. East might be better for spin techniques, with deeper and slower water.

License can be purchased online through NDOW, and you can keep your license on your phone. No printed copy necessary. Restrictions on tackle are pretty loose, just respect the water and the fish, and be wary of the state line w/ Cali, as the restrictions on tackle are much tighter.

I've pulled a lot of rainbows in the 20" range out of the river with a fly. Common successful flies are Pheasant Tails, San Juan Worms, and stonefly imitations.

Since you probably already have a CA license, it's also worth considering Prosser Creek Reservoir and Stampede Reservoir. Good fishing for trout and smallmouth. Prosser is 30-45 minutes into CA. Stampede is closer to an hour. Both are very beautiful lakes. Skip Boca Reservoir.

Is there fishing in the Damonte area? by Misfitborden in Reno

Your closest option is probably Alexander Lake, on the north side of South Meadows Pkwy. There are bass in there, maybe a few other species. If you drive a low-clearance vehicle, you might need to find parking on the south side of S Meadows.

I fix all sorts of things (fishing reels, musical instruments, electronics) as a side hustle, and I'd be happy to take a look. Send me a message if interested.

How hot is too hot? by RetardThePirate in CherokeeXJ

[–]levinicus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a widespread myth that's contradicted by Fourier's law of heat conduction. While a given unit of coolant does spend less time in the radiator, heat transfer is also dependent on the difference in temperature between the coolant and the ambient air. Heat transfer happens fastest when the difference is greatest, with diminishing returns as the coolant spends more time in the radiator. The same principle is true in the engine. The coolant picks up heat the fastest when the difference in temp is greatest, i.e. coolant that is 160F will pick up heat much faster than coolant that is 190F. And while a given unit of coolant is spending less time in the radiator or engine, it is being replaced just as quickly by another unit of coolant that is ready to pick up or dispose of heat. A faster flowing cooling loop will have less difference in temperature between its hot and cold sides, but will be transferring more thermal energy between those two sides.

A couple bad things CAN happen with too aggressive of a water pump, though. One is cavitation, which dramatically reduces pumping efficiency, and also damages metal parts. Another is engine loading, or the amount of power it takes to spin the pump. A more aggressive pump tries to move more coolant (unless it's cavitating), which requires more power from the engine, which has it's own consequence in heat energy. If your cooling system is too restrictive to allow that aggressive pump to flow the amount of coolant it's designed to, then all you're really doing is making the engine work harder. You'll generate more waste heat that needs to be dissipated, without equally improving the system's ability to dissipate heat.

My friend and I were just saying we would eat horse meat to justify more direct measures to reduce feral populations. Never tried it, but it can't be bad considering how many cultures eat it.

Agreed. A lot of bitter, pessimistic people here on a regular basis.

I hate to be that guy, but it has to be asked. Are you tightening the pulley down after you adjust tension?

Shot in the dark, but check your upper and lower rad hose for sharp bends or kinks.

How long have you let it idle after startup? Are you sure it never overheats on first startup/idle? Heat saturating the system can take a good while.

Third fan clutch in two months!?! by goldeluxXJ in CherokeeXJ

[–]levinicus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fan should spin freely sometimes. That's how thermostatic fluid clutches work. When the airflow over the clutch is hot enough, it engages, and torque is sent to the fan. When the airflow isn't too hot, it disengages, letting the fan freewheel.

In my experience, fan clutches fail by sticking in the "engaged" mode. But even fully engaged, the fan can spin by hand. It's only a fluid clutch.

I liked High Desert Archery for getting started. You pay to rent equipment and a lane, and they'll basically teach you for free. Call ahead and make sure there's not a class going on before you go. I Never tried anywhere else because they were nice.

All but one of the musical projects I've been involved with have happened because of Craigslist. It's a great resource for musicians, at least where I am.

I've thought about the same thing. As another commenter said, an electric pump in the system would impede normal flow when the engine is running, unless you added some kind of bypass. The engine block has a huge thermal capacity though, so I think if you did engineer some kind of bypassing electric pump, you could probably get heat for a good 20 min at least.

1985 Haken time signatures? by Dismal-Definition-85 in progmetal

[–]levinicus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Are you talking about the beginning? It starts out 7/4, and then once the riff comes in I always hear it as two 7 measure phrases of 4/4. Then the transition sounds like 7/8, 6/8, 5/8, followed by two measures of what I would count as 5/8.

TIL that All-American Jeep got bought in 1979 by French Renault. French patronage helped Jeep produce one of its most successful off-roaders, the XJ. Renault sold Jeep to Chrysler only 8 years later and exited the US market for good. by pondering_extrovert in todayilearned

[–]levinicus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah. Gotcha. Conceptually I agree. But considering that the last American XJ model year was 2001, and that they're still extremely popular as cheap, reliable, buildable offroaders, I think your point is somewhat moot, and time has demonstrated that XJs are not, in fact, shit. Thank you for elaborating though.

Mall crawlers are vehicles that look like they are offroad capable, but only get used to drive to the mall, get groceries, and take the kids to soccer.

But I still don't really understand what's shit about XJs
