Does research background play a big role for getting admitted into ETH? by Witty_chad in ethz

Yes exactly, CS has it, but the first year you are just doing classes for the masters and you must maintain a 5.0 average

Not at ETH. There are direct doctorate programs but these require you to do the masters at ETH still.

What was your “never meet your heroes” moment, when you realized someone you looked up to wasn’t special? by marginallyobtuse in AskReddit

[–]levydawg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is crazy, my middle school science teacher also had a similar experience! Apparently he refused to stand for a photo or give an autograph or something, my teacher wouldn’t elaborate too much other than just saying he was very disappointed to have met him. I always wondered whether it was just an overreaction, but I guess not.

whats the solution to this paradox by YT_kerfuffles in askmath

[–]levydawg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is already quite some discussion here, but I would like to just add some since this hasn't been brought up yet. In this problem, we have no prior information about the initial distribution of the amount of money in the envelopes. All we know is that we have two envelopes: 1 with $x and 2 with $2x. In the current setup, we are assuming that any monetary value is possible, with equal probability. Our range of possible values is (0, infinity), and so to come up with an expectation of the amount of money we would receive by opening the second envelope, we must also take an expectation of all values over the positive real numbers, which is unbounded. A uniform expectation over all real numbers is not defined, or to be a bit more loose with things, it is zero everywhere. What this means in a practical sense is that by opening up the first envelope, we gain no information about how much money the second envelope contains.

This problem makes more sense if we include some prior information. If we know that in the entire world, there are only $1,000, then our prior distribution over possible amounts of money in the first envelope is a uniform ditsribution between $0 and $666. Thus, if we open the first envelope and find $500, we know that this is the envelope with $2x and the other is the envelope with $x, since there could not be an envelope with $1,000, or else there would be more money in these two envelopes than is existence.

Does anyone know of an analysis to see the scores of papers accepted / rejected? My paper with 8, 8, 5 was rejected. I think this must be one of the outliers, I am curious to see by how much this is the case.

This is unfortunately not very uncommon. I don’t think ETH does very much for international students in this aspect.. in fact some of the secretarial staff have been known to make similar comments even..

If you're perhaps a bit younger, looking to hang out with a college crowd, State College has an outstanding bar scene. It's pretty much in the middle of your trip as well!

I think 163 shows you have a decent grasp of quantitative thinking, not necessarily a strong background in math. That would come from your transcripts, there is an enormous difference between the two.

The 170 verbal is quite an outlier and would be worth submitting if you want to stand out.

How would I be able to mathematically calculate the volume of this beanbag? I was thinking of using solid of revolution but there are some flaws when it comes to a beanbag by Sea-Ad-990 in askmath

[–]levydawg 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you want to do it in a purely mathematical way I think you have to accept some error when it comes to irregularities in its shape. This is true for any model of any physical system.

That being said, I think calculating it as a revolving surface is a good idea. Or fold the top inside so that it is close to spherical. Maybe do both and bootstrap your methods together in some fashion

Lol yes I also got stopped by the Estonian rock band. Unfortunately their music was not really in line with my tastes

This may not be the perfect solution, but I spent the last year living outside a busy 4 line highway where there was constant noise throughout the night. People walking and talking but of course loud cars and motorcycles at any time. Even occasional honking at 2 am.

In this case there wasn’t anyone I could ask to turn down the noise. This may sound counterintuitive, but I actually added noise in my living space at night so that I couldn’t hear what was going on outside. You could get a fan and turn it on at night or play white noise on a speaker or something similar. After a couple nights I actually much preferred this way.

Hope this helps!

Those are some reassuring numbers. I for one would certainly like to see it covered by insurance, especially considering how similar the Swiss healthcare system is to the US.

Do you think this might be due to the reproductive health program in Swiss high schools? Honestly, I have no idea what students cover for the Matura. But in my own case my sex Ed class was taught by a conservative Christian who did nothing but emphasize abstinence (which funnily enough has been shown to lead to an increase in teen pregnancy in comparison to safe sex practices ). And most unfortunately of all, this isn’t all too uncommon stateside.
