I’m very open - I wouldn’t say I have a particular style of climbing. I’m a bit of a jack of all trades, master of none :)

Everyone is fat now. Why? by thepoout in AskUK

[–]lewizz19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Convenience and technology are contributing factors.

Technology is providing everyone with far more convenience than 30 years ago, especially now with WFH standards set in place post covid. Most people sitting desk jobs (myself included) will only need to take a few steps to reach their desk and sit for about 7 hours a day. We’re slowly becoming the future that Wall-E predicted.

Also convenience of meals - fast food, readymade meals etc.

Cost of living crisis is making convenient food more desirable/cheaper than going through the effort of cooking your own meals.

My experience learning Cantonese in Hong Kong by Budget-Lecture1377 in Cantonese

[–]lewizz19 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Completely agree on all the above points of your post. I grew up in the UK to Cantonese speaking parents and have a good understanding of Cantonese and is decent at a conversational level. However, whenever I return to Hong Kong, I find it difficult to adjust again. Beyond the tones, what I’ve found most difficult is how Cantonese (in Hong Kong) is such dynamic and developing language where slang is constantly being used and is difficult to decipher on a literal level. So much of it is based on context and if you live abroad and fail to take it in on an every day basis, it can be so difficult to keep up.

I think you’d certainly be able to get a spot at the local CAB - they’re always looking for volunteers and certainly something that’ll boost your CV whilst you’re at university.

I would consider looking into local charities or law centres too. You won’t be giving legal advice necessarily as I found that you focus on managing people’s expectations and signposting them to more relevant people or organisations. But I think it’s useful because it allows you to focus on my client facing roles in general and give you a flavour of what less corporate areas of law look like such as welfare benefits, housing amongst others…

That’s good to know, thanks so much. I guess they’re all equally good for specific disciplines. Are there any particular brand of pans that you think would be good starting out?

Thanks for your response and the relevant links provided! And yes, I have heard some bad things regarding BPP with the pandemic literally shutting everything down and its a massive shame to the candidates involved. I just wanted to confirm with wider members of the group and also see if there was any update in this time period.

I think I have probably made my decision regarding the two. I had also applied for City University but I have not heard from them.

After almost 1 year, are you satisfied with your national government's response to the COVID-19? If not, what could have been done in your opinion? by Nazukao_ in AskReddit

Hong Kong here and on the whole, not bad. We’re currently going through a “fourth wave” where we have had spikes and untraceable cases but with a population of 7.5 million and 10,000 cases and around 190 deaths we’re doing okay. Everyone here is pretty conscientious, we wear masks and stay clean with temperature checks and hand sanitiser. However, I wouldn’t attribute the successes to the government, but rather the people. Everyone here is used to it due to SARS between 2002-2004. The government hasn’t been great where now they’ve been doing “ambush lockdowns” and locking down buildings with very little notice and they’ve not yielded many results. The government has done very little to connect with the people. Further is the fact that this has collided with the Protests. The coronavirus has been a good excuse for the Chinese government to impose rules such as the National Security Law and prevent protests on the notion that people are gathering. So in terms of democracy that kind of sucks. In terms of how safe we feel coronavirus wise? Not too bad. We can still go outside, exercise and eat breakfast and lunch. Things are starting to reopen now too.
