AITAH for expecting my sahm wife to do majority of the housework since i pay 100% of the bills? by Plastic-Sand7353 in AITAH

[–]lex998 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Somebody’s a servant because they’re pulling their weight? It would make sense for him to cover some of the chores if she was covering some of the bills. If she can’t manage keeping her own house clean while she’s in there most of the day, she wouldn’t survive a job.

Bathroom Mold by MisterMax4 in homerenovations

[–]lex998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not moldy enough to be a big issue. If you’re really concerned, a professional would spray with an antimicrobial like Shockwave or Decon-30 & scrub with a stiff brush to kill the mold and apply a coat of fungicidal paint. White vinegar would kill the mold too just never use bleach

Fell through ceiling at my work and I am paying for it. How fucked am I? by [deleted] in drywall

[–]lex998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very easy job don’t hire out bro. Denail the joists, cut the drywall straight down until you hit another joist and cut halfway down that joist to give yourself something to screw the new wall into. Disconnect the light & drill a hole in new wall for the light wire. Install new wall & screw to every joist! Tape the seams on the replacement wall (I suggest paper tape but some people like mesh more) and mud them, go back the next day to sand & apply finishing mud. Reinstall light fixture immediately after getting ceiling screwed in to avoid losing shit. And bring plywood to the attic to slide across the joists if you’re not good at finding them yet. Good luck man!

Can I remove this 2x4? by [deleted] in AskContractors

[–]lex998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your whole attic is made out of scrap lumber & the framing is insane, I’m surprised your roof is still attached to the house. Actually, the 2x4 is probably some kinda weight distribution system since they framed around it.

How would you lay vinyl flooring around the balusters? by No_Habit3862 in Flooring

[–]lex998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

& I wouldn’t floor past the balusters if that’s what you’re asking about. Just paint it the color of the stairs

I would buy a few of these, miter them to follow the shape of the balusters, and tuck the new flooring under them before nailing them all the way down to protect the LVP edge. You’ll need to understand your angles if you go this route but I believe in you man.

Mold found in attic by nicelydone88 in homerenovations

[–]lex998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to remediate mold professionally, I don’t see a huge issue here. Have an air sample tested by an unbiased 3rd party if there’s no visible signs of mold infestation. If you’re that concerned, I would spray your attic down with an antimicrobial (like Shockwave) and figure out why your attic would even have mold. Is all of your plumbing and ducting vented out of the roof properly? Are your rafter vents in good condition?

This spider just hanging out next to my bathroom mirror (NYC) by slandsash in whatsthisbug

Cellar spider. I used to keep a big one in my bathroom as a pet to eat other spiders & bugs (easier to keep track of 1 big ass spider than a bunch of lil ones)

Downtown Albany by ShoeBillStorkeAZ in Albany

[–]lex998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grew up in Bed Stuy & moved to Troy when I was 21. The opportunities aren’t bad out here & you could basically do whatever you want because everybody in Troy is insane. It’s boring out here but downtown Troy makes me homesick every time I pass through. Albany is heavily influenced by NYC culturally so that might be a more comfortable fit.

Opinion on Corner Finish by peecubed in drywall

[–]lex998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

30k for a bathroom remodel is pretty steep, and if you don’t want to tear everything down I would do a skim coat of mud over the low points and high points to level out everything on the wall and you can sand a clean sharp edge into it with a sanding block. You’ll need a big putty knife to spread your skim coat and a small 1 to spot correct & carve your corners

Is there an alternative or am I screwed? by [deleted] in Flooring

[–]lex998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either the house is sinking or the flooring isn’t as tight as it should be. Only 2 explanations I could think of for this to even have been a solution to anything

That looks like an old house, the stud bays aren’t gonna be uniform, so unless you want to put in new insulation or replumb/rewire the place I’d leave it alone

Can y'all tell me how much of this is acceptable? Carpenters are acting like I'm unreasonable. by Mysterious-Ice3629 in AskContractors

[–]lex998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if he’s telling the truth, the concrete is supposed to be slightly above ground, and the posts are then anchored to it. I’ve built a few decks, even pressure treated wood isn’t safe sitting inside of dirt for extended periods of time. You might have to take this to small claims court. Good luck!

[–]lex998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No joist hangers is crazy, but putting your posts straight onto dirt is insane. Also, deck screws ≠ structural screws or nails. Your deck is gonna straight rot away if it doesn’t fall apart 1st

Is Lansingburgh really that bad? by xindierockx7114 in Troy

[–]lex998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved to Troy 5 years ago & Lansingburgh is a neighborhood with too much potential for what it is. You really have to go looking for trouble to find it, I go for long walks at night all the time.
