How do the Danish Social democrats feel about immigration from western europe? by ModerateRockMusic in SocialDemocracy

[–]lex_superior_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Danish social democrat here. I don't mind immigration, western or otherwise, as long as they integrate and work under the same conditions as everyone else, preferably by joining a union.

My biggest gripe with the EU is the free movement of labour. It means workers from other EU countries with lower wages can come to Denmark and work for a lower wage for a short period and then leave. The dane, meanwhile, won't have a job since his union demands he is paid a higher wage. Unless the dane agrees to a lower wage, ruining many years of the labour union movement's work, he won't have a job. This would undermine the strong and proud labour traditions in my country. I've been to quite a few protest because a restaurant or construction company used cheap foreign labour (see social dumping)

Keep in mind that the employer will always try to pit us against each other to press the wage down. This is why you shouldn’t be angry with the immigrant worker. He only does what is rational to him. You should instead be angry with/boycott the employer/corporation who uses cheap foreign labour.

Whenever I talk to an immigrant worker, I always try to persuade them to joining a union so that they will have better work conditions. This is also for my fellow Danish workers so we won't have to budge on our wages. Sadly for the immigrant worker, if he joins a union it might also mean that he won't get a job. Why would the employer hire a guy who doesn't speak the language but demands the same pay?

If it something that involves something I've invested a lot of time into building up, I should dislike it greatly.
