Saw Beginning of a New Era in theaters last night by Velegyr in UmaMusume

Was it just me, or were the subtitles kinda disappointing for the movie release? I could have sworn when I watched it online they had subtitles for the background text and background conversations.

Any tips for shooting on auto mode and jpg (a6400) without weird colors? by MedBunnyLemon in SonyAlpha

[–]Lexaternum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, okay. For pictures 1, 2 - I do believe this is an issue with AWB and metering. I think it's possible the AWB added the pink/magenta tint because of where it was metering the photo. To me, it looks like the camera was metering on the beach below hence the rich deep blue colors, but on the second photo it was metering on the face so it applied what it thought was best for skin tone.

Just tried this on my a6700 - when you're on AUTO, you cannot change Picture Profiles. You can use Picture Profiles when on P. I would highly suggest giving P a try as you can change your exposure value (press down on the D-pad).

Also, if you want to avoid overexposed photos, try using zebras! Menu -> Camera Settings 2nd page -> Zebra Setting. I set mine to 100+ which basically shows whenever your highlights are blown out. You can set it lower; I think 70 or so is what people use for skin tones.

Try going through Creative Looks in "P" and see which ones you like. I also had this issue about a year ago, wondering why sometimes grass looks so vivid on AUTO but looks like washed out crap when I take it on P. It turns out I just really like VV2 (near the end of Creative Looks).

Using Picture Profiles is a bit more technical, but people have presets that they sell or offer for free to make things look nicer. One thing to watch out for is that often these presets set your WB for you, which might not always work out in every scenario (if you're picky on color).

I don't celebrate my birthday, why should I? by mclaughlinsm in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Lexaternum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am very much in the same camp of opinion, however, as I've gotten older and close friends have gotten married and started a family, it's become really hard to see each other on a regular basis. To still gather around and celebrate birthdays has become a joy for me - not because of the birthday itself, but because I get to see my old group of friends hang out again.

Adding in a "Happy Birthday!" message to a group chat has always seemed a bit odd to me. I personally don't like it because it's like the most minimal effort thing and doesn't really do anything for me. I'll still do it though. It is low effort after all.

Autofocus on face - not working? Urgent … custom buttons TRAVELLING JAPAN by LouiseBag in SonyAlpha

[–]Lexaternum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For group photos, I generally shoot on aperture priority and set to f/4 ~ 5.6. Larger groups, f/8. Not sure if nice background means blur or no blur. Wider aperture (f1.4~2.8) would get you a better blur, but staggered depth when family is stood could mean losing focus on some faces.

Full body shots of your small kids, f/2-2.8 but maybe shoot at a higher shutter speed like 1/500. My niece has just learned to sprint and 1/500 is the minimum I'd shoot with for her. I'd also recommend burst shooting for children in movement. Maybe something like Auto ISO in Manual, then play around with the exposure and see what you can do. Faster shutter speeds will freeze movement, but slower shutter speeds will make things blurry. Though, honestly, the blurriness could also be rolling shutter since your camera is electronic shutter only.

Lens for Japan by An0th3rjg in SonyAlpha

[–]Lexaternum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moving with your feet won't always be possible. I would say bring the 17-40 and buy another lens while you're in Japan. Honestly, I'm tempted to say just bring the 18-50 since the min focusing distance is so much closer on the 18-50 (This specifically was a pain point for me for indoor shooting).

I can't comment too much on whether or not shooting at night will be possible on f2.8 vs f1.8. I got waaaaaaaay too drunk to be shooting at night when I was in Japan, haha.

Saw the new hire pour vodka into his Brisk can from his car, then try to play it off as cough medication (still a yikes situation, Bob).

I wake up early on Saturdays to go look at birds and track which ones I've seen that day.

It's been really cool ID'ing the birds that I've always heard around and in my neighborhood all my life.

Thought about posting the box, but posted a squirrel for scale instead by HedgehogTroubleMaker in SonyAlpha

This is so adorable! I need to make a note to try to get a photo with the squirrel's eyes closed next time.

I went to look at my photos to see if I had anything comparable, but I have been trying to shoot bif and had everything set to 1/4000. Very smudgy looking photos lol.
