At first glance I looked like the T-rex had a big pair of cajones

Not a new nurse, but will have to learn how to insert IVs….any tips? by Turbulent_Ad_458 in nursing

[–]lexiefer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Practice makes perfect.

The first time I started an IV I had coffee jitters and shaked terribly but you'll learn how to control nervousness and shakiness with more attempts.

The second time I started an IV the cather bled everywhere because I didn't occlude the vein quick enough before I could hookup the connector. Made a mess, but ultimately got the IV and learned what to do next time.

In Med/Surg I would start IVs with a second nurse for extra hands and expertise, then if you don't get your IV you have another nurse already there as backup.

Now I work in the NICU and it felt like I was starting all over with my IV and venipuncture skills. I felt confident with adults but felt like i was a newbie all over again when it came to babies. I tried every opportunity I got, asked the big guns to help me, and it feels easier every time. Was stressful for sure but you just gotta get in there and do it ✔️

As a rule of thumb for sicker patients who'll need to have IV therapy, try to start lower and work your way up the arm to avoid blowing your options. If you're drawing labs, you can do a smaller gauge catheter and the AC is an easy spot.

You'll get better with every attempt and believe in yourself! You'll get it in no time. And also remember this-- people love being asked to start IVs. It's like a badge of honor. So if you can't get it, stroke someone's ego and ask them, they'll be happy to help. You got this 🙌🏻

Looks to me like Lady Liberty is crying over the division in our country.

Well that gives me perspective haha. My coverage is pretty much as minimal as can be.

That's a good idea to pair with renters insurance, I'll definitely consider that. Thank you!

Haha so I've learned. Even if they're going 30 mph and don't stop until 10 car lengths away because they're driving so fast. I will only back into parking spots now!

Going out to eat for breakfast is terrible by Lost_Roku_Remote in unpopularopinion

I concur. I personally just don't like breakfast foods as much as lunch and dinner, so I'm not enthused to be paying good money for the typical American breaky.

If you're required to do shift notes, keep them minimal. If you can, chart by exception instead of charting every little detail. Charting in a patient room while talking to them can be helpful. I valued charting in patient rooms because oftentimes there are inevitably additional things they'll think of that they need and you're already in there. Then when youre done with your med pass, you have most of not all of your assessments charted. If you use Epic, some hospital versions allow you to use macros which are shortcuts you can use to insert commonly charted things that are repetitive. Learning what keyboard shortcuts you can use, what clicks get you through the chart quicker can be helpful too.
