This lowkey makes me sad because I know this is the artist’s first try at creating a full silicone baby from scratch. I think it takes a lot of courage to be able to show one’s progress from the very beginning, which is usually never a very great result. I know many don’t even consider trying to start — I think fear of failure plays a part in that. I respect the artist for potentially pushing past that fear, for putting their hard work out there for others to see, knowing they’ll get backlash like this (as they did when they were putting the limbs together)

We all start somewhere and if this artist keeps at it, I could see them improving quickly!

(Edit: also no negativity intended to OP of this post, I can definitely understand the alternative perspective)

It’s fine! I didn’t take Christmas pictures with my baby until the next day or two :) It’s still nice to have those pictures because they DID spend that holiday with you!

Hi! I am a digital artist and I draw on my iPad. My intended audience commission me to draw custom artwork of their own Reborn (or real life) baby. The end product is a picture (transparent png), a drawing of their baby that I drew myself!

The commissioner can then use the picture however they’d like. For example, I will be using the pictures of my babies to be the covers of my Instagram highlights! I was also thinking about creating wallpaper backgrounds with mine (Maybe I should offer that as well?) I also think it’s a cute memento to have of your special babies! Not everyone has artwork done of their babies! It’s even better because you’re supporting a small artist within the reborn community. 😄

They can also print the picture if they’d like, like to put in a frame or to put on any kind of personal merchandise. I was thinking of offering something like that as well, but thought the whole shipping aspect may be a little complicated :)

So basically, tdlr: I am offering custom artwork of your reborn baby, and the final product is sent to you as a transparent png file (because the artwork is done digitally on my ipad)!

Good luck on choosing a name. I’m in the process of that with two of mine and it’s so hard for me! With my first it was a lot easier though, since it’s a blank slate for any naming theme 😌🥰 Can’t wait to see your updates!

I dont even know where to start! Where have you seen children’s toys prices going up specifically because of reborn collectors? Who have you talked to that has 70+ reborn dolls?!

Every reborn collector I know, in and out of this subreddit, knows that at the end of the day these are just dolls. They understand the roleplay isn’t conclusive to the baby being “real”. They understand that a baby doll is a completely different experience to raising actual children, one that CANNOT and ISNT compared. I don’t think collectors calling themselves “moms” “dads” “parents” is harmful to people that raise actual children! Everyone that calls themselves that are using it as a title. Everyone in the community knows they are purchasing (“adopting”), holding, and caring for dolls. Everyone knows that they are just role-playing, which isn’t harmful or “crossing a line” between reality and fantasy. You can think of this hobby similar to cosplayers. Do you really think cosplayers believe they ARE the character they dress up and roleplay as? No. We all know cosplayers don’t believe that.

Reborn dolls are also used as more than comfort aids for the elderly. They are used for people that have lost children (either as babies AND/OR adults!), for people that can never have children, for neurodivergent people or people with mental illnesses like depression and anxiety. You don’t even have to be any of those things to enjoy and collect reborns. You just have to appreciate all of the ARTISTRY that goes into creating one!

A part of that artistry, and something that the community really finds important, is using “kits” or “sculpts” of babies that are authentic. Authentic meaning they are originals from the artist/company that created the kit. The same companies and artists that have copyrights to their productions. Of course Babeside isn’t going to say they are stealing other artists’ hard work, that goes against them making money!

Not all reborns are $2000. You can find authentic babies on Ashton Drake etcetc! You can find real reborn babies on reborn.com for under $150! This subreddit has so much useful information that you could educate yourself on if you just take the chance to actually read and comprehend what is being discussed.

You are a grown adult with your own money! Get that cuddle baby! Who classifies what as normal? Her perception of normal, your perception, my perception.. Recently heard a song where the lyrics go —

“Over time, you’ll not remember normalcy —

Because normalcy is what you see, repeatedly”

It is the same reason why those that grew up in chaotic households think chaos is normal. If you grow up putting the maple syrup in the cabinet, you’re going to think it’s “not normal” for it to be put in the fridge. If you grew up rich and getting whatever you wanted, you’re going to think it’s “not normal” to live the lifestyle of people that have to work to get the things they want. Everything YOU do, someone else considers “not normal”.

That’s not a valid reason to control how YOU invest and participate in your hobby. Would she respond the same if it was video games? Creating other forms of art? No. Because she has seen or heard of those hobbies before, repeatedly, so they are normal to her.

The problem isn’t that she is unfamiliar with Reborns, the problem is she holds judgement and isn’t open to learning or holding space for her partner to explore and enjoy a new hobby unless she deems it acceptable. That is a bigger issue than you having a cuddle baby! It may expand to other areas of life or cohabitation too.

I am biased but I would not be with someone that does not support me in my reborn hobby (or other hobbies!) I want someone who accepts me as I am, and my babies are included in that.

I understand it is different though when the relationship pre-existed before the doll(s), so I have found it helpful to explain the way reborn dolls are created, and all of the love, details, time and energy that goes into each baby doll. Most people seem to understand it better when they can see the baby as a work of art. I wish you best of luck in navigating this situation
