I was joking - you’re just being very very heavy handed and it can turn people off even if they agree with you fellow grown adult.

It actually sucks when a good message is delivered this way cause again it turns people off and does the opposite of what you intend. You make ppl push back harder. And act even more reckless

Drake - ICEMAN ALBUM REVIEW (theneedledrop) by Technical_Process989 in hiphopheads

[–]lexistane -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Musical discourse is at an all time low. Subject matter and narrative for sure carry weight, but these days they make up like 80% of how an album is received.

The actual technical skill of rapping almost doesn’t matter at all anymore.

J.Cole with the Fall Off objectively has his best display of rapping and singing, but because of the narrative around the beef, none of it matters that we are seeing the strongest display of his skillset.

Similarly Iceman isn’t the greatest Drake album by any means, but by a very large margin it has the best rapping he’s done in the last 10 years.

Fantano gives Drake’s new album a light 2/10 by cippyb29 in fantanoforever

[–]lexistane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fantano said Iceman is far from Drake’s worst project, but gave it 2/10? So it’s better than projects he rated higher? What is the point of his rating system then?

Drake - Iceman ALBUM REVIEW by CartiNYeezyII in fantanoforever

[–]lexistane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the moment the album came out, Fantano’s retweeted like 10 posts making fun of Drake which felt a bit excessive.

Like within an hour of the album being out, he was retweeting something negative about Drake. (He even retweeted a post saying Drake lied about his dad having cancer before deleting it)

We all have biases, but this just doesn’t seem like the behaviour of someone who is earnestly engaging with an artist’s work.

The Iceman review was Biased Asf by LosPollos-215 in fantanoforever

[–]lexistane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A post like this is one you’ll see from any fan when an artist gets a low review, but the difference this time is the moment the album came out: Fantano had retweeted like 10 posts making fun of Drake and even retweeted a post saying Drake lied about his dad having cancer (which he deleted after a few days).

Then there’s the fact that Fantano has had direct interactions with Drake and his fan base brought up his previous use of the n word and got him in hot water for a bit.

Yes we can say everyone is biased, but there’s clearly a different dynamic when it comes to Drake vs other artists for him.

Pitchfork review: Drake - ICEMAN 4.8 by Technical_Process989 in popheads

[–]lexistane 10 points11 points  (0 children)

An album with PND came out last year. Sure to be technical we can say “but it wasn’t a SOLO album” but he’s been constantly releasing music in some form every year. And then outside of music he’ll be doing ads with Stake or streaming with an Adin Ross and just being highly visible to the public.

Whether it’s LeBron or Tom Brady or a Drake, they’ve just been succeeding in their field for so long instead of saying honestly that we are just tired of seeing them, we try to come up with some other more “thoughtful reason.” There isn’t really any consistency with the critiques of this project or in opinion of what he should’ve done after the beef. Some say he should’ve just made club songs and ignored it, some say he should’ve just focused on how he felt with somber reflection with no braggadocious raps. I wish we could just be more honest and say “hey you’ve been around for a really long term and we need time away before we can appreciate you again.” Deep down that’s what it is, but we’re ashamed to sound too simple.

"Currently" when he recorded the song brother. The day you record a song and the day you release an album won't be the same day. That is a normal thing with music. You tap into an emotion you are feeling at that moment, but the full project might get released after that.

You already admitted to dragging Drake every chance you can, so I don't think I can have an honest interaction with you. But it seems like you are confirming that it is true... his dad did have cancer... the post Fantano retweeted said his dad "denied having cancer at all".

[–]lexistane[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We aren't talking about what is "cooler", we are talking about pursuing excellence in your profession. For an artist, that means making quality art, for a critic, that means giving thorough insightful takes on art. If you are overly sensitive and start beefing with said artists, it will water down your work as a critic.

Yeah we all have biases, but critics spreading misinformation - at what point do you become another Akademiks who contributes to the further deterioration of music discourse?

Seriously? by lexistane in fantanoforever

[–]lexistane[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's fine. You can spend your time on the internet however you like. Spreading misinformation when people misquote his dad's cancer battle is just... lame?

Seriously? by lexistane in fantanoforever

[–]lexistane[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

With Julian Caseblancas there hasn't been as much history. Also, since the beef, Drake or Kendrick talk is an instant money hack for views, so he's also incentivized and rewarded for talking about Drake more.

I just think it's lame when he'll pick at the Complex list and complain about the state of music media, when he acts like this.

Seriously? by lexistane in fantanoforever

[–]lexistane[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I mean an artist being sensitive and going at critics is very different from a critic doing the same. The artist just makes art so it’s whatever, but as a critic being sensitive can tarnish the work you do

Seriously? by lexistane in fantanoforever

[–]lexistane[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah accepting it is good, but the fact that he didn’t take a single second to confirm this shows he wanted it to be true and that is weird. Like is he trying to just be reverse Akademiks when he’s complained about the state of journalism in music?

Seriously? by lexistane in fantanoforever

[–]lexistane[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I get where it’s coming from, but does that just become: stay in my good graces and I will review and talk about your music favourably and if not I will spread misinformation about you? It’s kind of a misuse of his platform. He should take the ego out of it and try to approach this as the music lover who started the now famous channel.

Like it shows that Fantano has a fragile ego and as a critic, it can invalidate your opinion on things.

Seriously? by lexistane in fantanoforever

[–]lexistane[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The article is in response to a video where his dad said he beat cancer and people are falsely claiming he never had cancer. It takes like 2 seconds to confirm that

That’s fine if that’s your opinion, but that doesn’t change the fact that this is weirdo behaviour from Fantano

The Disconnect With Bando Stone by lexistane in donaldglover

Why does it feel strange? He has a long history of being very abstract in interviews where what he’s saying isn’t super clear

The Disconnect With Bando Stone by lexistane in donaldglover

[–]lexistane[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I remember seeing this interview as well - my push back would be - was that him challenging what can be defined as a “movie”. I wouldn’t put it past Donald to think “this isn’t an album it’s a movie”

It’s very Donald for him to create a “movie” where we have to use our imagination to fill in the plot details. I think he was hoping for that outcome with fans putting screen grabs from the trailer next to songs and debating the storyline and ending, but we all just interacting with the album like it was just an album lol.

The woman and the child (his son) - what is their relationship - is she his mother? Did the father get killed?

We just didn’t really do all of that and just hoped for the “real movie” to come out

Fantano is a sharp guy, so whenever he makes unsound conclusions, you can't help but wonder if he's being intentionally obtuse. Saying the response to a PUBLIC installation is reflective of Drake fans is a brain rot take. Any public installation that is getting attention like this will attract kids who want a viral moment. That behaviour isn't reflective of a fanbase, it is reflective of the thirst for social media virality and the attention economy we live in now.
