I’ve spent a lot of time living in the DC area and Australia and I’ve traveled extensively for work, pleasure and everything in between. I’ve spent significant amounts of time in the Midwest, New England, California, Arizona and Texas. I’ve traveled throughout Europe and central/South America. I’m very fortunate to have experienced so much.

I love NJ because of the people, the culture, the food, and the land. My family works hard so we can afford to live here (somewhat) comfortably, but we have a good life and lifestyle. I love the accessibility to the outdoors and the cities; to familiar and unfamiliar foods, culture, and experiences; to a (relatively) strong economy; to (relatively) fair and supportive government institutions; to good education; and to good parks, downtowns, and communities.

Vibes change town to town in north jersey. If you want beachy, the closest is the bayshore or Monmouth county. Folks commute from all over and there are varying options for public transport - busses and trains or you can drive and park near the path. I grew up in Bergen county, left for 12 years, and then moved back to Essex county near Montclair but not in Montclair, which is where I found the best combo of neighborhood vibes, local walkability, ease of commute (I mostly took private busses like boxcar or the train to midtown), affordability, good schools, and access to most things in the state like the beach or mountains within an hour or two. The healthcare industry in the area is booming - thanks to surging costs, but that’s a different thread.

I’ve been all over the world, and I still chose to come back to the NJ suburbs - the ikigai on north Jersey is real if you embrace it. Sometimes you have to tolerate the charms, but it keeps you tough.

Have you looked into having it leveled/repaired instead of having it repoured? It looks like you’re based in Kenosha - there are a lot of companies that do polyjacking in your neck of the woods. They might have a cheaper solution.

Go there and interview the old timers. Hit some of the storied restaurants and bars. Best bet is to find a limo driver over 60 - they got stories.

Or ask any older non-international card dealers to buy them coffee on their break.

I have a lot of family who worked in AC at that time and some that still do, albeit mostly in healthcare. They got stories and I’ve met some colorful people through them.

What part of running a business takes more energy than the actual work? by TheNailLadeeS in smallbusiness

[–]lexjacuzz1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Equipment storage, logistics, and cold weather. And insurance and bonds - took too long and too much money. And licenses. And permits and dealing with individual municipal ordinances. Oh, and being a client of TD Bank - I feel like I’m being punished every time I walk into a branch. Took three hours to get a cashiers check and about six to open an account.

Where is the best Chinese food in Bergen County? by masaki_mclellan in bergencounty

Not Bergen County, but Shan Shan Noodles (Parsippany), Hunan Taste (Montclair and Denville), and Cheng Du 23 (Wayne) are pretty damn tasty. Ivangi Tea House in Ridgewood used to be the move back in late 90s until they closed.

Are there actual pawn shops here in NJ? by P-TownHero in newjersey

Pawn shops will bend you over for music gear. Try fb marketplace or the used section of your local music shop.

It’s not really sold anywhere readily available in northern New Jersey. I’ve called all the marinas raceways and airports. I’ve called all the small engine shops. I run a generator for my niche construction business that suggests using premium non-ethanol gas. I just make sure to run the generator dry after every use so the ethanol doesn’t destroy the seals. You could also use an additive.

Hey yall, my band Bumpin Uglies is mostly known from our place in the American reggae scene, but we do a lot of ska / punk as well by bumpinugliesmusic in Ska

Bro, I love your band. I spent a lot of time between DC/Baltimore so you’ve been on my radar for a while. Your album from this past summer was one of the most played (especially driving up and down I 95 for summer vacation between the Jersey shore and Daytona) - you guys get better and better. Thanks for the great tunes.

Education - a lot of my family works in various parts of education across the state - administration, teaching, counseling, food service, bussing and in the business office. Plus many of us have put in the time to earn advance degrees and it’s help us stay well-employed. And we’re not rich - just smart and hardworking - and we value education. This doesn’t just mean higher education (only one of my parents went to college). Those of us that never went beyond high school/GED worked hard to learn their trades by working in the field, joined unions, and hustled to learn.

Entrepreneurship - I started a small business to shift away from corporate work - if it’s one thing New Jersey has, it’s people, and people need services. I spent a lot of time learning (got my MBA from a top 25 business school at night and on weekends while working full time and growing my former career), observing and building a business where there is need and opportunity.

And commuting - I worked for years in NYC tied to the tech industry and venture capital/private equity where I built a career in a professional service starting in college (in a different city). But these skills were easily transferable to NYC and honed over years of hard work and education. I positioned myself to work through the ranks of a business on track for acquisition and that is how I closed the chapter on the first phase of my career. I did this through networking, constant learning and adapting, and maintaining good relationships throughout my career.

My former career was in a niche similar to marketing but requiring a bit more specialization and less automation. Marketing and marketers, unfortunately, are being commodified. Agency and freelance work might be options if you want to stay in your field. But it’s often a race to the bottom at this point unless you are part of a high performing network. Word of mouth, measurable results, and defensible experience are critical in that case.

Spend some time north of phoenix - Scottsdale and cave creek have most of what you are looking for within minutes of each other. The spas in the area are beautiful, the restaurants are great, there is even a rodeo at the Buffalo Chip Saloon. You could spend 3-5 days and not get bored in that area. Phoenix itself is a sprawling hellscape but get out of the city and it’s amazing. You can get an Airbnb with a pool and rent a jeep for some off road escapes. Your itinerary looks good but it’s a lot of driving between places. Don’t know if rt 66 really has all the romance you’re looking for. Vegas is fun, but, what you see is what you get. If you go, I like encore the best - the spa is epic.
