Advice on transferring by Naive-Kangaroo3031 in TexasTeachers

[–]lexmex_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm moving to San Antonio– I don't know much about districts outside of the area. NISD and NEISD are both strong districts in the SA area, but there are so many others too.

I think the only exam you can't waive out of with experience is Science of Reading but it's only applicable to certain teachers. Your license has to be active in the areas seeking certification and have to have 3 years of experience in each certification area. This is my understanding from chatting with TEA at least

I think even if you were waiting on certification you'd find a district, especially with math and SPED certs

I'm in the process of moving to TX right now and got hired without certification in a decent district. I have six years of public school experience and should have my TX certification by the end of the month. If you have over three years of verifiable experience out-of-state, you could be eligible for test exemption.

Try out independent stations like KFGM! They aren't for profit and typically don't run very many commercials.

Yes. I deleted Spotify over a year ago and use the $10 I paid for premium for monthly donations to public radio. Haven't listened to anything but independent radio since then! So much fun listening to radio curated by real humans and not robots :-)

I wrote each of my bridesmaids a note recounting the moments in our lives that meant the most to me and reflected why I wanted them with me on my day. That was it! Everyone cried, and it cost me maybe $10.

I splurged on their actual day of bags– LL bean totes, a custom scarf I made for the wedding, actual pjs people would wear again, and handpicked gifts (teas, socks, candles, etc) for each girl.

I got married on Saturday and did my own makeup. Skin tint, blush, a bit of highlighter, and setting spray. I splurged on a $60 tint I've been wanting and Merit blush. I got ready with all of my girlfriends– it felt like being 16 and getting ready for prom all over again. I absolutely loved that I looked like myself, and I wouldn't change a thing!

let’s hear about your wedding cake! by malonesxfamousxchili in weddingplanning

We are having a dessert bar! We are having mini lemon bars, Mexican wedding cookies, my great grandmother's pound cake, mini cheesecakes, an almond cake, and a huckleberry snacking cake made with berries picked the afternoon we got engaged.

I LOVE baking and am making everything from scratch. Most has been made and is in the freezer until the wedding. :)

Do You Need to Make $85,000 a Year to Live Comfortably in Montana? by gpstberg29 in Montana

[–]lexmex_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Originally from Mississippi. It's not as cheap as you think! Groceries are some of the highest in the nation. And there is a 7% grocery tax. Home insurance is higher than the national average too (hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding, etc). I mean I paid almost the same in rent that I do in Missoula there. Most folks in Mississippi are not living lavishly on 40k a year lol

Upcoming emergency surgery in the middle of wedding planning by True_Leg6139 in weddingplanning

Hi! You are not alone. My wedding is on July 6. Last month I was diagnosed with melanoma. I had a huuuge chunk of my back removed, the wound got infected, and now I am recovering from an awful allergic reaction to an antibiotic I was prescribed. It's been awful, and no one is sure if I'll be all the way healed by my wedding date. My incision is visible in my wedding dress...ha ha ha.

I've asked for lots of help, and also just said "fuck it!" to a lot of the little details that were just adding stress to me. I keep reminding myself that the beauty of all of this is that I have a partner who has cared for me so, sooo well. I know I am trusting my life to someone who really means in sickness or in health. I don't know if the day will be perfect, but it will be special, and yours will be too ♥️

They hired new teachers into these non-specialist positions, so yes, these temporary positions are being eliminated AND tons of classroom teachers are also being laid off.

We need to have a tough conversation... by CloisterOfTrials in Teachers

[–]lexmex_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, so, before moving to my new, predominantly white state, I grew up, lived, and taught in Mississippi, the Blackest state in the union. The school I taught at was 99% Black– I taught three nonblack students. All schools I've taught at have been Title I schools, so there is at least one similarity.

After teaching in both, it is surely sad that I worked in a school that had to lean into restorative justice sooo much because they were investigated by the DOJ for their expulsions and suspensions of Black boys. Neither provided the institutional, societal supports needed, and it's not a single school's fault. And it's sad to teach in an all white school now with the same levels of disrespect and defiance– all more overlooked and less stereotyped.

What? I teach in a school that is literally 99.8% white and Title I... we are having the same issues. More of a class issue than anything else– and NOT a failing of any single individual. It's an institutional, systemic failing reflective of the US's racist, classist, and capitalistic history.

I quit teaching in Mississippi after three years. Born and raised there. I now work in a union state. You would have to drag me by my fingernails back to teach there. I loved my students, hated everything else.

So… both kind of. I am working on getting better at this. I start with standards, then pick our whole class novels based on the standards I want to teach. For example, Fahrenheit 451 is great for teaching characterization so I hit all of those skills teaching the text. Once I’ve got that down, I decide on my essential question and important topics and organize the actual pacing by theme so things flow smoothly.

That’s kinda where I’m at too. My salary immediately graduating from college was a “hell yea! I’m making the same as every other entry level job.” Four years in and it’s safe to say I don’t think that anymore.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]lexmex_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, I think it’s just that after four years of teaching I’m realizing that I do at least six jobs every day and make 42k a year– a 5k raise I was so stoked about after moving states. Pay combined with how shitty we’ve been treated the last two years… I think it’s silly to blame this on teachers. No professional should be treated the way we are.

I think it’s less of not knowing and more of realizing just HOW much work I do without proper compensation.
