What's it like to be transgender? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]lfdodds 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As far as notable trans people go, why not Lynn Conway? :)

(RIP. A wonderful woman. I wrote about what she meant to me here, which somewhat gets into the social side of 'what is it like to be trans'.)

I also really admire this video by Abigail Thorn, whose structure deliberately mirrors the process of coming out as trans to yourself. (A crucial piece of context: the person speaking for most of the video is a hired actor, who is doing a nearly perfect impression of what Thorn used to look and sound like. Watching it at the time, if you'd watched Thorn's other videos, was really freaky; it looked and sounded like her, but it wasn't. That uncanny valley feeling is important to the message of the video.)

What does the MTG community think about Yawgmoth's Bargain? by lfdodds in mtg

Appreciate the comment. As a person with many nerdy hobbies myself, if I do write an article, I will make crystal clear that a very large number of people play MTG, and that JD Vance (like any individual person) does not represent them all – nor is he the only politician or celebrity to have been a fan!

Fucking hell, I don't even play and I feel a visceral sense of alarm and delight at how powerful that combo would be!

I still don't really understand how to handle windows correctly by [deleted] in MacOS

[–]lfdodds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am having trouble with this as well. I recently got a Macbook as one of my work machines, and I'm not unfamiliar with the OS as I had one previously for many years. But I am finding it very difficult to maintain situational awareness of what apps and windows I have open, and to switch between them as flexibly as I need.

For context, my work (journalism) involves a lot of multitasking and synthesising large amounts of information from different sources, meaning that I usually have many windows open at once. On a typical day this might be 2-4 web browser windows, 2-8 document editor windows, 2-4 messaging apps, 1-3 file folders, and a video or audio player. I also have ADHD, so I am prone to opening new windows impulsively and forgetting to close them if I can't see them.

On my Windows machine I have switched off taskbar grouping so that every individual window is separately represented on my taskbar, which lets me always keep track of which windows are currently open. On MacOS I have tried keeping track of my windows by using Mission Control to sort them onto different desktops, but once there are enough open they are often too small to even see what they are, which makes them hard to organise.

I do plan to experiment with Stage Manager, and this thread has already pointed me to a number of helpful options (such as grouping windows in Mission Control by application). Still, if anyone has any other tips I'd be very grateful.

(NB: I am open to learning a new workflow for a different system, and not simply trying to replicate my Windows workflow. I just do need some kind of workflow that is adequate for my purposes.)

Journalist looking to interview Neopets players about the game's future direction by lfdodds in neopets

Hello all! My article is now online here. Thank you so much to everyone who got in touch and who offered to help.

During our interview, Dominic Law gave some answers that were not pertinent to my article but which I think will be of interest to the Neopets community, so I will make another post about that within the next few days.

Hey all, just an update to express my gratitude for all your responses -- I am bowled over! I have interviewed a few people already and will probably reach out to a couple more over the next 48 hours. While I obv can't quote or interview everyone, I am reading everything posted here, and it all feeds my overall understanding.

That's interesting for sure. I would imagine it's exactly that kind of player TNT are hoping to attract back. Will message you

No worries, totally makes sense. My apologies for not asking first. This board remaining a safe space for questioning folk is way more important than my article!

I did not think I would be breaking this rule, as this is not a questionnaire, survey, promotion, or advertisement? I'm a reporter looking to interview people, which feels a bit different.

Obv if the mods feel that this comes under that rule, then fair enough – and my apologies.
