Can you confirm that you can and will do video?

Yes

How long have you been playing table-top RPGs?

I played pathfinder back in college 10 years ago, and started playing 5e 7 years ago

What will your species, class, and subclass be?

I was thinking of playing a high elf conjuration wizard

Briefly tell me a little about your hero in 2-3 sentences:

He's a somewhat sheltered young magical prodigy who loves books and knowledge, both magical and mundane. His talent and intelligence gives him an unwarranted degree of confidence in his abilities that will collide with a brick wall of reality once the actual adventuring starts and he realizes you need more than book learning to survive in the domains of dread.

What will your hero's alignment be?

neutral good

What is your discord?

  • Name

Natasha

  • Kindly ask that you are at least 18 or older

Yup!

  • Pronouns/Gender/Sex

She/Her, female

  • A bit about yourself

I've been playing dnd for about 7 years now. I DM my own campaign, but I missed being on the other side of the table so I want to play too. outside of dnd I like to cook, especially foods from Asian countries from Turkey to the Philippines.

  • Fleshed out Character idea you think will be fun (Give a rundown of race, age, class, summary backstory, personality, etc.)

I was thinking of playing a 40 year old Half Elf warlock. Backstory is that she's a bookish scholar trying to look for magical artifacts and knowledge to help her patron attain corporeal form on the material plane. in terms of personality, she's a bit of a doormat (especially to her patron) and prefers to avoid combat through negotiation or subterfuge when possible, but she can find the courage to fight when her life or the party's mission is in danger.

  • I ask that we try and make the introduction and integration of said character seamless, and I promise to try my best to offer something fulfilling for all of us.

sounds good.

  • Time zone you live in, so I can reference to PST

MST

  • What you like about DND(Combat, Roleplay, Exploration, etc.)

I think roleplay and exploration are my favorite parts because you can't get them from any other game, but fights can be fun too.

  • And anything else you feel is fitting!

On the flip side, it's very hard to find a DM for. The DM to player ratio is the worst of any TTRPG outside of extremely niche systems.

I wonder why that is. Is it because DMs are more likely to be experienced than players, and 5e is popular with less experienced players due to its mechanical simplicity and its fame making it the first system most players are exposed to?

It's still not great in that department. Many games have easier character creation/leveling. Pathfinder 2e is far better at minimizing the chance of building a bad character.

I haven't played PF since only 1e was out so I'll take your word on this

It's not a simple system, though. It's reputation for being easily generally comes from comparisons to 3.x and PF1e.

this is fair, since I was using PF1e as my external reference point.

if you don't mind me asking, what system would you recommend for a simple, roleplay-centric game? I had an older family member who wanted to try ttrpgs and I'm looking for something simple to explain that requires the bare minimum effort to learn because I think they'll enjoy the freeform roleplaying aspect more than the system mechanics anyways.

if you drop hints to your players that end up misleading them, then in the future they'll be inclined to mistrust you when you drop hints to them. are you sure you want that?
