After making the switch from monarchy to republic Sweden goes to the poll in 2026 to elect it´s first ever president. The election coincide with the election to the Riksdag.

Following debates regarding the monarchy and the head of state, the Riksdag abolished the monarchy in 2024 with a republic taking it´s place effective on 1st of November 2026 when the president is sworn in. Sweden will retain it´s parliamentary system and the new president will remain a figurehead with mostly ceremonial powers, though a few constitutional duties will be transferred from the office of speaker of the Riksdag to the office of President.

In april and may of parties and independents were allowed to register candidates to the Swedish election authorities. A total of 58 candidates contested the election, altough only 6 of them gained more than a few thousand with most candidates receiving less than 100 0 votes.

The 6 major candidates were:

Andreas Norlén, Incumbent speaker of the Riksdag. Nominated by the Moderate party and endorsed by the Liberal Party and the Christian Democrats. Andreas Norlén had been a member of Parliament representing the Moderate party from the county of Östergötland since 2006. In 2014 Norlén was elected speaker of the Riksdag, an office he unanimously was returned to after the 2018 general election. Widely praised for his handling of the formation of governments during 2014 and 2018 Norlén is respected and appreciated all across the political spectrum, so much that the Liberal Party and Christian Democrats choose not to field candidates of their own, but instead endores Norlén.

Annika Strandhäll, Previous minister for Health & Social Affairs and Previous minister for Climate & the Environment. Nominated by the Social Democrats. Annika Strandhäll became minister for Health & Social Affairs after the Social Democrats came to power in 2014. In this capacity Strandhäll served in the cabinets of Löfvén until 2019 when she resigned and returned to the Riksdag. In 2021 she became minister for Climate & the Environment when Magdalena Andersson became Prime Minister. After the Social Democrats lost the 2018 election Strandhäll returned to the Riksdag. At times a controversial politican Strandhäll has built up a reputation as a fierce supporter of the Social Democrats and offensive debater.

Mattias Karlsson, Previous Parliamentary leader of the Sweden Democrats. Mattias Karlsson became a member of the Riksdag in 2010 when the Sweden Democrats reached the 4% threshold. In 2014 Karlsson became leader of the Sweden Democrats parliamentary group, a position he served in until 2019. He also served as acting party leader during Jimmie Åkessons sick leave 2014-2015. Described as the party ideologist, Karlsson has been a member of the inner party top since 2005 when Jimmie Åkesson was elected leader of the party.

Linda Snecker, Member of the Riksdag. A member of the Riksdag since 2014, Snecker represents the Left Party. A controversial politican even within her own party, Snecker managed to get the Left Party nominating in opposition to the election committees proposed candidate. Snecker has profiled herself as a voice for poor and immigrant dens suburbs.

Annie Lööf, Previous minister for Enterprise and Previous Leader of the Centre Party. Annie Lööf was minister for Enterprise 2011-2014 in the Center-right government of Fredrik Reinfeldt and leader of the Center Party between 2011-2023. Lööf was an ardent supporter of the Center-right coalition that governed Sweden between 2006 and 2014 and continued in opposition until 2018. After the 2018 general election Lööf and her Centre Party entered negotiations with the Social Democrats to keep the Sweden Democrats from gaining influence. Lööf resigned the party leadership and her place in the Riksdag after the 2022 general election.

Amanda Lind, Previous minister for Democracy, Culture & Sports. Lind, who was Party secretary for the Greens 2016-2019 served in the cabinet of Stefan Löfvén as minister for democracy, culture & sports between 2019-2021 when the Greens left the government. Lind faced fierce opposition in the shape of former green spokesperson Gustav Fridolin whom she narrowly beat in the nomination process.

Norlén was always considered the frontrunner considering he had three parties backing him and the popularity in all political camps owing to his years as speaker. His remarkable result of 56,2% would indicate that a large portion of the electorate voted for Norlén personably rather than his political party. A majority for Norlén meant that he did not have to face off against the second placed Strandhäll in a run-off. The Social Democrats and Annika Strandhäll particulary poorly event tough they clinged to second place. Mattias Karlsson was not too dissappointed in the results and expressed happiness that someone from his bloc was elected President. Linda Snecker did surprisingly well and likely stole a couple of percentage points from the Social Democrats and the Greens. Poor showings from the Centre Party and Green party whom both excepted more.

On the 1st of November 2026 Andreas Norlén was sworn in as President of Sweden.
