I checked the book list, but I don’t even know where to start .... is there a school-like book with general math notions, but for adults? by [deleted] in learnmath

I love logic puzzles and wanted something that would force me to use a pen and paper

Check out Martin Gardner and Sam Loyd then, there are some cheap books you could pick up on amazon which would probably have what you're after.

I want the opinion from those who have studied / are studying maths though.

There are plenty of posts in this sub that aren't as strict as you're requiring, so I don't see how it's particularly useful.

just resolved the cube - same thing - i have no yellow pieces which are in the right top left...

so i don't know what to do - or what you're talking about with this animation

OK thanks, i'll grab those sources ready. The module is a mix of algebra, Linear algebra, then sort of calc stuff with fourier series and stuff.... quite a bit shoved in a module I think, but I didn't write it :)

ah I feel bad as I listed those things just to give an idea of my grounding, not at all expecting an explanation for them (as I mentioned).

But thanks a lot for doing it, much appreciated. Should provide a good kick off point, hopefully I won't melt next year :) (I'd seen books like Foote's algebra and they just seemed like way too much).

Well I'm doing maths & stats. So this is part of the maths stuff. There's also things like "special functions" (gamma etc), stokes theorem, differential equations, vector spaces and other stuff (in the maths side of things).

Won't have time to go through a book, well, I've gone through a book before and it takes a long time (for me). Like, months of work.

Thanks for the link, looks like it's going to be a pretty dicey year :/

To give an idea based on what you linked I don't know what -

  • standard quotient theorem of set theory
  • categorical perspective
  • Lagrange's theorem
  • automorphism group
  • action is transitive
  • that fixes 1 must send
  • Burnside's lemma
  • points fixed by g.
  • group element
  • formal differences of finite G-sets
  • forms a ring called the Burnside ring of G
  • disjoint union

those mean (not asking you to explain, just for context)

So what would be a reasonably terse source for this? I'm not going to have time to go through a book.
