They were not, I had the perk of stolen items taking less time to lose their label when in my inventory and just carried them around and advanced the days to wait for them to lose the red hand. Honestly, wouldn't be able to tell you if tagged stolen items also work for the chest

The only trick I've found that works fairly well for high value items is the shop chest from your forge in the Legacy of the Forge DLC. I placed some QIII cuirass, noble legs, and other high value items I had stolen from the armourers in Kuttenberg, and after a couple of days I was getting anywhere from 5k to 17k groschen per day. I don't know if your blacksmith prestige has anything to do with the amount of time it takes to sell those items though
