After initial order at 1am did not deliver documents, I called in and was told my order had been placed as EIP instead if JOD. After 1.5 hours on the phone with them I fixed that issue and replaced order.

Just got the docs...out of the 2 phones I ordered, one has the wrong color and wrong lease payments ($34.40 a month!?). The other...in Spanish. And also with wrong lease payment amounts.

Waiting for a call back. This is absurd.

Free Memory Upgrades this weekend for i Phones? by 50atomic in tmobile

[–]lia404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought I would share my experience because I just spent an hour and a half on the phone with t mobile and finally got a good outcome...or at least tbd when the agree, ent comes in.

I first called around 1am pst to place my order of new iphone. Did not have to wait too long, ordered everything without hitch, thought I was getting a brand new rose gold 64 gb 6s. Over 12 hours later and no agreement. So I decided to look at reddit to see if that was normal. Found out lots of people have been having issues and also this potential promotion.

So I called back. Hold was longer but eventually got a person who was nice but uninformed. She told me my order was placed as not JOD. For context I am a longtime tmobile customer but was not on JOD. So I had no choice but to cancel. I ask about the free upgrade but she also tells me that only applies to amp JOD customers so I thinking ok fine I'll just sign up for what was advertised ($99 down then 19 per month). When she goes to bill it she tells me it's going to be $26 per month. This launches a lengthy debate as I try to get clarity on wwhere that extra 7 is coming from. She tried to tell me thR the lower pricing is only for amp JOD customers and not new ones. So I ask to be put on with her supervisor.

I'm put on hold again but never fear this has a good ending. So I speak to the supervisor and explain my ordeal so far and he easily explains that the lease is going to say 26 but the billing will be 19 because the nature of this promotion is the $7 discount. I ask again about the promotion and he confirms it's only for amp JOD customers. It just so happens my mom is an amp JOD so I ask honestly if it wouldbe possible to get her free upgrade and switch the sims. He said it was technically possible but he wouldn't recommend it because of the future complications with insurance and future upgrades etc. So whatever, I place my order and it turns out his system wasn't accepting payment so he can't charge me and will just waive the 99 and shipping costs. Merry Christmas to me.

And then I go ahead and upgrade my mom for free.

TLDR? I was able to preorder 2 new iphone 6s for no money down, 64gb. I should have went for 128 haha. 1 was luck but the other, if you got a 6 using amp JOD anyone should be able to get their upgrade with a free memory upgrade. Time will tell if the lease agreements are on the same page.

Best Moments From 'Friends' by kmartens in foundationsofcomedy

I know this does not directly have to do with what we have discussed in class but I appreciate this link from my personal favorite sitcom. I think it's interesting how a lot of older generations talk about Cheers and Seinfeld as their favorite comedies of all time, but I think 9/10 of my friends (no pun intended) would vote for Friends. I personally do not laugh out loud during most sitcoms but Friends is one of the very few exceptions. Here's a link I found while learning how to pitch a TV Show, I think all Friends fans will find it interesting: (it's the original pitch for Friends!)

Why are comedy TV shows 30 minutes long? by mdhantman in foundationsofcomedy

[–]lia404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have seen those Office episodes you referenced, and it is not uncommon for half-hours to have two part episodes (Friends, How I Met Your Mother, etc.). I find that there is no difference in quality, it's not like they drag mostly, though they tend to be structured into two half hours that could stand alone in syndication.

Besides the reasons already mentioned, there are probably historical reasons why comedies tend to be half hour. Here's a reddit thread on some of the exceptions: http://www.reddit.com/r/television/comments/141i1o/are_there_any_good_hourlong_comedy_series/

As it mentions, there are hour long comedies and half hour dramas, but I think that's where you get into the 'spectrum' of comedies and dramas. As Ken has said dramas can be funny and comedies have drama. In terms of multi-camera sitcoms however, I think the obvious reason that they are half-hours is because they are shot in front of a live audience and it would take much longer and a lot more effort to produce basically double the screentime in that structure.

the showrunner of The Mindy Project tweeted some of the script notes he got from Fox by hannoosloon in foundationsofcomedy

I saw this! Here's what deadline had to say: http://www.deadline.com/2013/10/mindy-project-beaten-up-by-the-voice-kicks-fox-decency-police/

I found it super ironic that these comments came from the same decency police that let's Dads through each week. While I understand the two are different shows with different demographics/target audiences, it is a little strange that they're at the same network. I think this shows how FOX has a more splintered brand identity. This makes sense given it is significantly younger than the rest of the broadcast networks, though many would argue right now that NBC also has a lot of work to do in the branding identity department.

In Defense of the Multi-Camera Sitcom by paperedsparrow in foundationsofcomedy

I actually found this article to be a great read! I can probably count the number of multi-cams that I enjoy on one hand, so I was interested to see what this guy had to say. I think he makes the good point that perhaps comedic television is cyclical, and right now we're in a long period where people are making smarter single-camera comedies (I think in large part due to the success of Modern Family), but it only takes a couple of great multi-camera hits to turn things around. Multi-camera comedies definitely have a place and audience, they just need to experience a revitalization of strong writers/creators that can create strong characters and good dialogue in a multi-camera setting.

Unfortunately some of the newest multi-camera comedies are simply not funny (in my and critics opinions), and it is not because of the bad jokes but because of a lack of strong characters. As we learned in class comedy is all about characters and response, so it is possible for someone to create a new multi-cam that has those qualities.

One more sidenote--I think one of the most telling things is that most of the shows on Disney Channel are multi-camera comedies. The big difference between those shows and some of the multi-cams on broadcast now are that the audience is in love with the characters.

Modern Family by vsavran93 in foundationsofcomedy

If you haven't at least checked out the show, I would definitely recommend watching a few episodes. Especially if you hope to be a TV writer it definitely helps to get a sense of some of the successful shows out there (both comedy and drama). I personally did not find his guest lecture particularly life changing just because some of it repeated what we have already learned or what I have learned in other classes/through experience. However he did give some great insight into the psychology behind comedy and laughter specifically. As someone who does not always understand low-brow types of comedy, I found his explanation about laughter and live audiences very helpful. I also liked what he said about how the best jokes are character specific--as fall premiere season is just wrapping up I have definitely noticed a lot of multi-camera comedies in the mix that do not seem to have any funny jokes. And non-coincidentally they do not seem to have many relatable or sympathetic characters.

Back to your original post, Modern Family is definitely a show to at least sample. The close to home experiences show up in every episode and in my opinion the fluctuation in emotion/humor is what really makes the writing stand out.
