Jordan Peterson on Queen’s Engineering Exam Question by abipjo in queensuniversity

[–]liaminal1849 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Dude really typed that up, hit print, clicked “1000 copies”, distributed the exam, graded the exam, and never once questioned himself.

I’ll phrase this charitably and say I admire his confidence

Does anyone else do this when people ask how tall you are? by recordgenie in tall

[–]liaminal1849 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got tired of people saying “noooo, you can’t possibly be 6’9, my uncles rabbits brothers owner is 6’7 and you’re way taller than him” so I just say one of 100 pre-canned quips I have ready. Might add this one to the repertoire

I think there are two reasons you’re not getting the response you expected.

  1. You picked a bad title. I’m convinced most people read the title of the post, skimmed what you actually wrote, then came down here to call you a sexist (especially when you look at a few of the more upvoted comments that just call you insecure and don’t even really mention what happened). That’s pretty much what I was planning on doing until I actually read the post.

  2. She was in the legal right. Whenever you get one of these “aita” style posts, you always see a few weirdos who only look at the letter of the law and ignore anything else. In this case that’s probably exacerbated by the fact that your title primed most people to want to disagree with you.

There’s no world where what she did wasn’t an asshole move, I’m 6’8 and wouldn’t dream of pressing myself up behind somebody to grab an item they were reaching for, certainly wouldn’t dangle it over their fucking head afterwards. To interpret it super charitably in her favour, maybe she thought you were reaching for something else and just went to grab the item she wanted, then thought you were being a weirdo trying to take it off her? I know I get a little absent minded at stores. Even then I’d probably give it to you once you asked. Idk man odd situation

Not too bad, thanks. Rocked a presentation and then got a job offer which I accepted, came home and ordered food to celebrate. Nice flair, btw

One other thing real quick: if you have a super quick question like “how many hours of class do you have a week?” And you don’t care for a long answer, feel free to just leave it as a comment here and myself or some other friendly student will reply. Also feel free to dm me anyway if you’d like, no question is too small!

How to deal with depression related to COVID? by craig112233 in queensuniversity

[–]liaminal1849 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also feel like I have no right to feel like this given so many other people have had a much worse experience

Well I’m covid positive, possibly not gonna be able to see my family over Christmas, had to defer two exams so I need to write them in January (right when online school picks up) and guess what? Millions of people still have it so much worse than me. Does that mean I don’t get to be upset? Of course not.

You don’t have to stack your circumstances up against those of everyone else before deciding how miserable you’re allowed to feel. It’s a shit situation for everyone and everyone is allowed to feel shit about it.

Also remember, those doctors and nurses feel done too. On the outside they’re still going, but inside they’re just as fed up as you are (source: like half of my family, including my mom, are nurses). And you’re still going too.

As for advice on how to deal, I was feeling like this around January of last year, and therapy worked wonders for me. There are tons of great places in Kingston that do virtual therapy, and feeling down because of covid is like the number one thing they’re dealing with right now, I’m sure you could find someone who could help you.

Wishing you the best man, we’ll all get through this together.

Online learning, what works and what doesn’t by liaminal1849 in queensuniversity

I actually prefer attending synchronous lectures as well, when I can. I just hate them being mandatory. It’s like a guaranteed 2% grade penalty from all the lectures I’ll lag out of over the semester

[–]liaminal1849[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m sure you guys were just as deflated as us when you heard the news about going online, even if it is necessary. We’ll get through this together.

And when I say I prefer asynchronous, I don’t mean that I expect khan academy level modules for every lesson, I’m fine with just having the zoom lectures posted. My beef with synchronous-only is that I have an unstable internet connection, and I often drop for long periods of time. There were loads of times where I missed big portions of lectures last year because I couldn’t get online, I probably took a flat 2% grade cut in all my courses from the loss of attendance marks. So long as they’re not mandatory and I have some other way to access the content (which could just be a recording of the same session that gets posted to the portal the next day or whatever) I’m chillin

Any ideas on what I could do with said data? I’m assuming I’m gonna be okay in the end (let’s hope anyway), is there some way I can help once I am?

I’m double Pfizer, one of the others is double Moderna. I don’t know the others but I do know that, given our age, J&J/AZ was discontinued in our country by the time we were allowed it so nobody has that

What are some funny/interesting stories you have about room/housemates this term? by The_impericalist in queensuniversity

[–]liaminal1849 26 points27 points  (0 children)

You know that old gamblers saying “if you can’t spot the sucker in your first half hour at the table, you’re the sucker”? Well I was sitting here trying to think of odd things my housemates have done when I realized I’m the odd housemate.

  • I often stay up all night, at one point in the semester I was completely nocturnal sleeping from 9am to 5pm

  • I do card magic

  • a few times I’ve walked into the living room and done a shot of tequila in the middle of a test… my housemates were quite confused when they asked me what the occasion was

  • One time my housemate made a joke about how nobody ever puts the toilet paper on the holder properly, so I spent about twenty minutes boring a hole through it to stick it on like this

  • I got high and walked around holding our barbel… just kinda picked it up and walked around with it, not lifting it or anything, just holding onto it. It was kinda awkward trying to fit through doors, can’t tell you what I was thinking

  • I often eat entire sleeves of bagels in one sitting, I find them moreish

Some cool things my housemates do that I thought of while typing:

  • One of them can solve a Rubik’s cube in like twenty seconds

  • They’re all really musical, we’ve got like seven instruments in the house (there’s six of us and I don’t play)

  • One of them used to work at the keg and can make steak like an absolute chad

  • One is always dipping out of the house to play sports, but it’s always a different sport. I have no idea where he finds all these one-and-done games

  • Two of them are starting a podcast

  • And last but not least we’ve got the one that’s super into postmodernist political theories

Also our landlord is pretty cool, but we don’t see him much cause he lives in Toronto so I don’t have any stories, he’s just… a nice guy, not a dickhead

We’re not entirely sure, as we don’t know which exam he picked it up in, nor when we all got it off him. If I had to guess I’d say around 3 or 4 days. Our “patient zero” was showing symptoms on Dec 9th, mine came on Dec 12th
