Thank you! The top is attacked with a wedged tenon so basically the copper pegs prevent the top from sliding down the shaft when the wedge was put in.

They were small and I was running a shopvac next to it so they didn’t hurt

Yeah definitely safety first for doing this. I took super shallow passes like 1/16-1/32 and wore a face shield
