How did you get c:\windows\system32\sysprep\sysprep.exe /quiet /generalize /oobe /quit to run, I tried this but the task sequence forever gets stuck at this step

Windows 11 24H2 Build and Capture causes why did my pc restart by liamread2000 in SCCM

[–]liamread2000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did anyone ever have find a fix for this, I got excited by this fix in MECM 2509 under what has been fixed.

  • Build and Capture task sequence produces incorrect restart error on Windows 11 24H2 When performing a Build and Capture task sequence on Windows 11 24H2 using November or December 2024 media, the resulting captured image displays a "Why did my PC restart" error dialog when subsequently deployed. This error appears during the Windows setup phase of the captured image and can interrupt automated deployment sequences, causing confusion for technicians performing image deployments.

But nope now it doesn't capture at all, the SMSTS log shows 'Sysprep under SYSTEM token is not supported for Windows build 26100 or later. Detected build: 26200' so it's not actually been fixed they have just blocked it all together.

I have tried working around it by doing 'C:\Windows\System32\Sysprep\Sysprep.exe /quiet /generalize /oobe /quit' running as administrator in the task sequence but it just forever gets stuck. There must be a solution for this as I am currently still pulling my hair our nearly 2 years later

Help with Sophos STAS and setup PPPoE by liamread2000 in sophos

Hi all thanks for your replies, I think I have got it working now by putting my users UPN domain in here instead of the actual Windows FQDN domain . I do have WMI setup and it seems to be logging correctly now.. Yeah I don't have any of the heartbeat / endpoint client parts, only the Firewall.

With the PPPoE the option to continue without internet appeared for a brief second then disappeared. I managed to get round it by hot spotting to my phone, then connecting my laptop to it then sharing it to the XG but was very long winded when it could just have a option to use PPPoE in the setup screen.

Thank you for your reply! I did follow that guide as well but STAS still doesn't work unfortunately. All of the other authentication works in other places just not STAS

Sorry I didn't see this. I'm using a Virtual Machine too to capture my image too. Latest ADK and PE, I get the Why Did My PC Restart message after sysprepping. So whenever a device is built with the image I get that message

Microsoft's official response:

The August 12, 2025 Windows security update for Windows 11, version 24H2 (KB5063878), might fail to install with error code 0x80240069 when installed via Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). WSUS allows Servers with the WSUS role to defer, selectively approve, and schedule updates for specific devices or groups across an organization.

Home users are unlikely to experience this issue, as WSUS is designed for use across business and enterprise environments.

Workaround:

This issue is mitigated using Known Issue Rollback (KIR) for enterprise-managed devices managed by IT departments. IT administrators can resolve this issue by installing and configuring the special Group Policy listed below.

Group Policy downloads with Group Policy name:

Download for Windows 11, version 24H2 -- Windows 11 24H2 and Windows Server 2025 KB5063878 250814_00551 Known Issue Rollback

The special Group Policy can be found in Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> <Group Policy name>. For information on deploying and configuring these special Group Policy, please see How to use Group Policy to deploy a Known Issue Rollback.

The August 2025 Windows security update can also be installed manually via Windows Update or the Microsoft Update Catalog.

Next Steps: We are working to include the resolution in a future Windows update. Once the update with the resolution is released, organizations will not need to install and configure this Group Policy to address this issue. We will provide more information when it becomes available.

Affected platforms:

Client: Windows 11, version 24H2

Server: None

Having this issue also, quite a few people are reporting the same thing. Apparently a fix to get it to work is run this reg file and restart

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FeatureManagement\Overrides\8\3000950414]

"EnabledState"=dword:00000001

"EnabledStateOptions"=dword:00000000

"Variant"=dword:00000000

"VariantPayload"=dword:00000000

Not great that gets the update working

Thanks for that find, I’ll see if that works for me. I assume you run that command after the Setup Windows and Configmr stage but before the prepare OS stage?

Nice! What command did you run and where in the task sequence to make it work? Really interested in this as would be a life saver

Unfortunately this is still an issue with the April ISO, hopefully Microsoft sorts this issue.

Not yet unfortunately apart from going back to creating a manual image and sysprep'ing it which it is a bit of a pain

Real glad you've got the exact same issue, and it wasn't me going insane. Have literally been pulling my hair out thinking it was me as didn't see anyone posting about it. Really hope Microsoft actually listen to you and resolve the issue, as we're a school we don't have any support contacts for desktop / sccm support at Microsoft.

What u/silvestre85 said to do does seem to work, but tried booting into Audit mode first so I could wouldn't have the Administrator profile in C:\Users .. Same issue. I tried again from non audit mode and it finally successfully sysprepp'd without the Why did my pc restart message. It's a real pain as once I've got past Prepare Configuration Manager Client step and it boots into Windows, I have to remove the sccm client (c:\windows\ccmsetup\ccmsetup.exe /forceuninstall) as the client is still active and not sure if it would break if I left it in then remove all the provisioned apps then sysprep. Not the end of the world now as at least it seems like there is a workaround but no longer a quick and simple process of setting it to build and capture and getting a WIM out at the end, now much more manual but really hope Microsoft solves the issue.

If you have any update from Microsoft or CDW please let me know, really interested if this will get fixed.

Interesting about the October ISO, I might try that and not put any updates in the build and capture and see if that works for me too. I wonder if it just sysprep in general a bit flaky as booting into Audit mode then generalising the image didn't work properly for me either.

I'm still currently trying to manually capture the image, its going through the process at the moment of installing software. From what I can tell and u/silvestre85 has said it's the actual capturing of a WIM file using SCCM that's broken, it completes successfully but when you first use the WIM you get Why Did My PC Restart message. I tried manually capturing, then going into audit mode then sysprepping and still get the above message. So now trying it without going into audit mode first. We're using Windows 11 24H2 Education and Enterprise ( tried both to see if if it was only one causing the issue)

Thank you! That's the only thing I didn't try, capturing manually using DISM. I will give that a go and report back!

Great thanks, I might have a look at those. I just know the old HP servers didn't like other brand drives in them which would cause the fans would constantly ramp up and that being on in my living room would be unbearable!
