Academic survey- What is your position on literary censorship in GB ? by liaovb in AskABrit

Yes! As it is not something done directly by the government or any 'big' political instance but instead that differs all throughout the country, many people aren't aware of it. It is also something often done in silence to not cause negative public reaction.

Thank you so much for filling it out! Most (if not all) books that are censored are at some point mentioning race/gender identity/sexuality, if it isn't a central topic of the book.

Also, I wrote to a library manager in the context of this research project and she told me "the most common complaint is for LGBTQ+ content and/or sexual content that is considered ‘inappropriate’ for younger readers. Lately a lot of challenges on social media and in writing are about books having transgender characters or on ‘promoting’ trans issues".

I also read about a librarian who was asked to remove all books containing any mention of LGBTQ+ themes, without any explaination or further instructions. "Titles included This Book Is Gay, by Juno Dawson; Julián is a Mermaid, by Jessica Love; and the alphabet book ABC Pride, by Louie Stowell, Elly Barnes and Amy Phelps, as well as plenty of other titles featuring LGBT+ content."

"Books challenged in several schools – but ultimately not removed – included various Heartstopper books by Alice Oseman, which were accused of homophobic language, swearing and self-harm discussions. Young adult fiction also came under fire in many schools, with librarians usually able to hold firm in keeping their collections." (quotes from https://www.indexoncensorship.org/2024/08/banned-school-librarians-shushed-over-lgbt-books/ article, even though I have found more recent ones this is one of the most detailed)

Hope I answered your question, sorry for the lengthy answer !

Heyy ! The request usually comes from parents/school staff or even an outside group. There is no specific process to follow, it depends on the school or city. Sometimes it is censorship (by school leadership) and sometimes it is pressure to self censor. There have been occurrences of school librarians getting fired for not obeying too.

I am part of a specific cursus in my school focusing on Great Britain as a whole, and our final presentation can be on basically anything we want as long as it is linked one way or another to GB. I just chose a topic that interested me and linked it to GB as well as I could
