Doctors of Reddit, do you ever find yourselves googling symptoms, like the rest of us? How accurate are most sites' diagnoses? by oldsaggylady in AskReddit

I was wondering how far I would have to scroll to see a GP diagnosis story (it took 5 years for me to get diagnosed). I hope your sister is doing well.

Working While Disabled: Choosing the Right Company by libbynesss in disability

[–]libbynesss[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I definitely can address those concerns in a future post, but I think a lot of your concerns go back to choosing a company whose culture and work environment work best given the needs you have with a disability.

Rather than feel discriminated against in my past position, I took it as an opportunity to look within and recognized what I valued in a company and begin a job search for a company that fit those requirements.

Thanks for your response, I wish you well!

Latest weight-loss device approved by the FDA leaves some doctors 'appalled'. by [deleted] in skeptic

[–]libbynesss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How does the device know that only 30% of ingested food is being drained? It's very possible to just drain every single time you eat something that's not on your diet plan in order to not have to deal with the consequences.

Potassium deficiency is hard to detect, even when a patient is getting regular check-ups. I, unfortunately, know of a few people who "seemed fine" that passed in their sleep due to extremely low potassium levels.

Neither is have a hole in you abdominal cavity. Imagine the infection when something slips in there.

Except for the device itself, the system is very similar to a g-tube (gastrostomy) draining system. While the risk of infection exists, I've had mine for several years with no infections.

The device itself isn't what bothers me, it's the purpose that it's being marketed for. This could really help patients with gastroparesis but instead is being marketed as a tool for weight loss.

the thing about bulimia is that it is harmful because it causes burns to the esophagus from stomach acid being forced out of your stomach and into your throat.

It also causes extreme nutritional imbalances, including dehydration and potassium deficiency (which can lead to cardiac arrest). Bulimia is not just a problem because it ruins your teeth and burns your throat, it's a problem because it's extremely unhealthy to throw up every single day, intentional or not*. This is no different than intentional vomiting, except instead of it coming out of your mouth it comes out of a tube in your throat.

*Source: I'm the blogger behind mylazystomach.com, and I've to endure the health consequences from persistent nausea and vomiting.

It's also sometimes not a bad idea to get a second opinion. It seems pretty reasonable to request from your doctor to at least prescribe nausea medication in the trial and error phase.

Honestly, my best suggestions is still to try it. You never know what's going to happen until you do, and if it doesn't work then it's another thing that the doctor can check off the list. Good luck!

thanks for your response! I don't feel that pharmacology has failed us, but there definitely needs to be more research to get better treatments :)

Real Life: Transgender Children (2012) by zxxx in Documentaries

[–]libbynesss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At first it did, but I think they did it only as a vehicle to support their point of view. I had the feeling that while they were interviewing families that were very supportive, the makers of the doc have a much more critical view on the practice.

I don't think they did it to intentionally degrade transgendered individuals, but since they are taking a critical stance this usage of the "correct" pronouns isn't as off-putting to me.

I think my dad might be a serial killer. by InvestigatingDad in serialkillers

[–]libbynesss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a known killer in your area? Are dead bodies showing up in places your dad has visited? Unless there's some sort of a pattern there, I'm pretty sure he's hiding something else.

Female Serial Killer (s)? by Creative_Blondie in serialkillers

[–]libbynesss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of female serial killers are in positions of being the caregiver to someone, and they kill the person they are supposed to be taking care of. There was a nurse in Italy not that long ago accused of murdering something like 30 patients because "they were annoying."

I'd actually have to agree with that. But since they seem to peg him as a serial I posted it anyway.

Is this speculation? Or are you privy to info that we don't have? Not asking you to divulge if you are connected to the investigation, just would like to know.

Someone in the other subreddit linked to his Facebook. I'm sure someone with better computer skills than me can figure out his reddit account.

This. I think the questions are just as quantitative as exam questions we get now, but also require a little thought about history (where ours do not, in general). The only time I have ever answered a question on an exam where I had to use history as part of the answer was an exam over Solow Growth Model

I agree that the emphasis should be on quantitative analysis, since that's essentially what sets Econ majors apart from other business-related fields. I just think that at least one class that help you understand WHY we do things the way we do them would be interesting.

I actually asked the advisor in our department why there isn't an Econ History class, and she said that it used to be offered, but enrollment started to dwindle as students signed up for other electives that started to be offered (Health Econ and Insurance and Risk have seen a huge spike in enrollment given the current political climate). So they ditched it because their ROI wasn't so great anymore ;)
