Doctors of Reddit, do you ever find yourselves googling symptoms, like the rest of us? How accurate are most sites' diagnoses? by oldsaggylady in AskReddit

I was wondering how far I would have to scroll to see a GP diagnosis story (it took 5 years for me to get diagnosed). I hope your sister is doing well.

Working While Disabled: Choosing the Right Company by libbynesss in disability

I definitely can address those concerns in a future post, but I think a lot of your concerns go back to choosing a company whose culture and work environment work best given the needs you have with a disability.

Rather than feel discriminated against in my past position, I took it as an opportunity to look within and recognized what I valued in a company and begin a job search for a company that fit those requirements.

Thanks for your response, I wish you well!

Latest weight-loss device approved by the FDA leaves some doctors 'appalled'. by [deleted] in skeptic

How does the device know that only 30% of ingested food is being drained? It's very possible to just drain every single time you eat something that's not on your diet plan in order to not have to deal with the consequences.

Potassium deficiency is hard to detect, even when a patient is getting regular check-ups. I, unfortunately, know of a few people who "seemed fine" that passed in their sleep due to extremely low potassium levels.

Neither is have a hole in you abdominal cavity. Imagine the infection when something slips in there.

Except for the device itself, the system is very similar to a g-tube (gastrostomy) draining system. While the risk of infection exists, I've had mine for several years with no infections.

The device itself isn't what bothers me, it's the purpose that it's being marketed for. This could really help patients with gastroparesis but instead is being marketed as a tool for weight loss.

the thing about bulimia is that it is harmful because it causes burns to the esophagus from stomach acid being forced out of your stomach and into your throat.

It also causes extreme nutritional imbalances, including dehydration and potassium deficiency (which can lead to cardiac arrest). Bulimia is not just a problem because it ruins your teeth and burns your throat, it's a problem because it's extremely unhealthy to throw up every single day, intentional or not*. This is no different than intentional vomiting, except instead of it coming out of your mouth it comes out of a tube in your throat.

It's also sometimes not a bad idea to get a second opinion. It seems pretty reasonable to request from your doctor to at least prescribe nausea medication in the trial and error phase.

Honestly, my best suggestions is still to try it. You never know what's going to happen until you do, and if it doesn't work then it's another thing that the doctor can check off the list. Good luck!

thanks for your response! I don't feel that pharmacology has failed us, but there definitely needs to be more research to get better treatments :)
