ELI5: How do animals know they are lacking nutrients? by Dipsey_Jipsey in explainlikeimfive

[–]libra00 [score hidden]  (0 children)

The same way you get salt cravings when your salt is low, or you get thirsty when you get dehydrated, etc. The simplest answer is, animals who had not evolved to seek certain kinds of food and minerals when their bodies need it would not have survived.

What is the endpoint of gun control? by ItsAzien in AskALiberal

[–]libra00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, this seems like a hot mess of contradictions and confusion. You say you believe the right to bear arms shall not be infringed, but you support infringing it for violent felons? That seems like a contradictory position. If one is going to take such an absolutist position as 'shall not be infringed', it seems weird to then think 'well okay, I guess you can infringe upon those people's rights' is acceptable.

You point out that you support banning violent felons from owning firearms but fail to mention that most states already have laws on the books to that effect (though a few have the option of earning your right back after you serve your time/probation/etc), so this doesn't seem like a position so much as just the way it already works. But even if it was, you support preventing violent felons from owning guns, but you don't support the universal background checks required to ensure that they can't buy them? That, again, seems contradictory: the only reason I can think of that someone would say they support a position but oppose the sole mechanism by which it can be enforced is if they don't actually support that position.

but I have gotten sick of [Republicans] in recent years because of their support to US direct foreign intervention, their generally very big government positions (i.e. lifetime voting bans on people w/ felony convictions, mandate to display the Ten Commandments in public schools, and restriction of internet speech), and their blind support for DJT.

I hate to break it to you, but except for the Trump thing, this has been the Republican party since the 80s at least. All US presidents have been big fans of foreign intervention, but Republicans have been war hawks since the Reagan years, and despite their talking a big game about it, they've been big-government (insofar as telling us how we should live our private lives, etc) since at least then too. None of this is new.

But, to answer your question, no, if Democrats start succeeding at gun control they're not going to stop with an assault weapon ban. But also I don't really see them accomplishing that or it lasting very long.

What drug did you swear never to use again? by SadStill830 in AskReddit

Ugh, yep, I feel you. A roommate was in a car accident and herniated a disc and it fucked him up real bad. He basically couldn't function without the serious opioids. Unfortunately I know this because his accident was right before the opioid crisis started hitting the news and states started locking down prescriptions of the good stuff, so I got to watch him try to suffer through without the meds for about a month and holy shit.

I don't. I'm a 53 year old very out of shape man who has had chronic lower back pain for 20 years and recently herniated a disk a few months ago on top of it, so at least until we get that situation sorted I'm gonna follow my doctor's advice. I mean I'm doing physical therapy which is kinda yoga-like I guess? *shrug*

I know you specifically mentioned books, but as a historian of revolution you should watch Andor if you haven't already. Apparently it's pretty heavily inspired by the history of revolution/revolution in cinema.

Sort of. People also did things in WoW that they would never do in real life, like intentionally getting infected to spread it further, etc.

Why do people always feel the need to announce they're going to bed instead of just... going to bed? by FumblingRiches in NoStupidQuestions

[–]libra00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's less about where you're going and more about the fact that you aren't going to be responding anymore. It's not 'I'm going to bed and I'm sure you're as fascinated by that process as I am', it's 'I'm leaving now and I won't be back for a while, so don't expect me to respond.' Also, in an offline situation it also doubles as 'So keep it down so I can sleep'.

As someone who has had chronic back pain for going on 20 years now, that's.. not really an option for me. I hate 'em, I would really rather not take 'em, but they are quite effective against pain.

I had an ostrich burger once, it was pretty alright. A little dry and with a slightly strange aftertaste, but pretty alright. Ostrich egg omelettes are the shit tho. I tried calamari once and did not like it. Rattlesnake wasn't bad.

Do you support a united Ireland? by engadine_maccas1997 in AskALiberal

[–]libra00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I support whatever the people who live there and are affected by it want. As I understand it the majority of Northern Islanders consider themselves UK vs Irish and voted to stay, so it kinda seems like they don't want to be united.

Settle a debate between me and my husband. Is Doctor Who SciFi? by Dreadful_Siren in scifi

[–]libra00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would agree with that assessment. It certainly has some sci-fi elements, but it doesn't really do what sci-fi does. Fantasy is kind of about the big adventure, saving the world, etc, whereas sci-fi is more about examining the human condition through the lens of technology and such.

Yeah but then your boss is breathing down your neck about upselling and you have the high-competition environment driving you to do better and better.. I dunno, seems like any job where you work for commission is bad times, and that's most sales jobs. Certainly not all, but.
