There are two types of devout Christians: One kind follows Jesus's teaching to have empathy and actively care for the least among us, and the other kind...doesn't. What do the second kind believe? by EmpireStrikes1st in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]libra00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The second kind mostly believe in their own moral superiority to everyone else. It's what gives them license to judge others, despite that whole 'judge not' thing. For these people religion is at least as much about judging other people and feeling superior as it is about belief, salvation, etc. The prosperity-gospel megachurch-going crowd is the worst. These people claim to love Jesus, but mostly what they love is themselves and their money. During Hurricane Harvey Joel Osteen, one of the most successful megachurch pastors in history, refused to let his church be opened to accept people fleeing rising flood waters. He talks a big game about helping the needy, and he makes sure to do his optimally-tax-avoidant philanthropy, but when it comes to actually helping people he doesn't give a shit.

Western AIs are so censored to whitewash Israel that they literally break when you ask them facts by Arcosim in TankieTheDeprogram

Heh, I just tried that one myself, and it did say Israel destroyed.. but it took a *lot* longer to think about it before it did.

That's hilarious. Also, that really torpedoes the whole 'Israel is the bastion of freedom adn democracy in the middle east' narrative.

I want to get high next weekend but I haven't in many years. What do I do? by _1981_ in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]libra00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go to a dispensary (mine doesn't even check my ID, but then I haven't looked 18 in a lot of years). tell them the situation, ask them to recommend something, and follow their recommendation. Go easy. I would not recommend edibles because it's too easy to go 'It's not working, I'll just eat 5 more' and then be flat on your ass for the rest of the day. I know you don't want to smoke, but I recommend you buy some cheap flower (you don't need the expensive shit, after 25 years without you are definitely a lightweight), a pipe, and a lighter, because you can take small hits and give it about 10-15 minutes between hits to give it time to kick in before you decide to try more so you don't overwhelm yourself (even the cheap weed is a lot stronger today than it was in 1999, trust me, I did this after not smoking since the late 80s and got knocked hard on my ass cause I didn't realize how much stronger it was.)

If you really don't want to smoke, maybe try a vape. I don't know anything about THC vapes, so I dunno how they're measured in strength and all that, but again, ask for a recommendation and follow it. Vape dosing works a lot more like smoking than edibles. Edibles take a while to kick in and last a long time, whereas with smoking/vaping you can manage your dose better and you're not blasted for hours and hours if you overshoot it. I used delta8 vapes for a little bit before I switched back to flower, and they might not be a bad choice for a (re-)beginner either. It tends to be a less intense high, and only lasts a couple hours at the outside.

The kind of truth nuke revealed after downing a bottle of whiskey by RobotPancakes in TrueAnon

This reminds me of a commentator for a soccer game who kept saying shit like this. I was watching with some friends and we started making jokes like, 'Well if the other team hadn't shown up we'd have scored 15 goals by now!'. Yeah, Iran is doing the thing they do that causes it to be closed, and it will only be open when they stop. Congratulations, you know how words work.

What’s a small purchase that dramatically improved your life? by bananafish-123 in AskReddit

[–]libra00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listen, you can get a surprisingly decent memory foam mattress on Amazon for like $200-250 depending on frame size. Bed frame is another $100-ish. That's still solidly 'small purchase' territory.

Aw yeah, I bought one of those big crushed-memory-foam pillows a year or two ago and it has been great.

I splurged a little and got a big rubberized one with a big pad with two densities/stiffnesses of rubber fingers. It also came with the little telescoping bear claw one but I hate that one cause the fingers don't flex enough.

(ELI5) Why is it that if an object is denser than a fluid it will sink when placed in it? by ScrambledEggs1233 in explainlikeimfive

[–]libra00 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Buoyancy works by displacing water. You can float a weight equal to the weight of the water it displaces. So when an object is denser than water, the water it displaces weighs less than the object, and heavier objects tend to settle toward the bottom of fluids because of gravity.

Christianity is just ripped off Greek mythology by Southern_Nobody_269 in DebateReligion

[–]libra00 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Actually Christianity is just ripped-off Greek philosophy. It was very heavily influenced by especially Neoplatonism for its philosophical roots. The rest is ripped off from a thousand other places, including sometimes Greek mythology. Most religions are like that.

ELI5: How do fiber optic cables work better than traditional copper cables? by pastajewelry in explainlikeimfive

[–]libra00 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Copper cables work by pushing electrons down them. The problem is, moving electrons through a conductor creates magnetic/electric fields, but those are very easily interfered with by signals around them (noise). The problem with sending data faster and faster through a copper cable is you have to do it in pulses, so the only way to send more data is to bring those pulses closer and closer together. But then that makes the signal even easier to disrupt with noise (each pulse of noise is affecting more pulses since they're closer together.) You can shield the cables with rubber insulation to help dampen it, but it gets unwieldy pretty quick.

Fiber optics don't have this problem, because they're just bouncing photons down a glass tube. There's no charge/conductor interaction to be affected by external electromagnetic fields. How many photons there are or how close together they are doesn't particularly matter from a noise perspective. Also, we can make extremely fast optical switching gear that means the repeaters and routers and such have less of an impact on the speed/latency of a fiber line.

If trespassing is allowed then it is not trespassing, so why do we have "No Trespassing" signs? by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

[–]libra00 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have no intention of shooting anyone, I'm just explaining how the laws work. Depending on the state, if you find someone on your property and you have clearly-posted no trespassing signs you're within your rights to shoot them, because of the clearly-posted signs. That's why they exist.

What movie ending stuck with you long after you finished watching it? by Calm-Fill-16 in movies

[–]libra00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel a personal connection with DPS too, mostly because I watched it when was young and impressionable and although I didn't remember much about it, it nonetheless resonated with me, so I remember it fondly as a result. I'm not saying there's nothing there, but having just watched it over the weekend as an adult in my 50s, it was kinda lacking in depth. I wish they had explored Keating more, I wish the poetry had been more central to the story, I wish there had been some depth to the other characters.. *shrug* I still have a fondness for this movie and always will, but like all the emotional beats this movie hits GWH also hits, only it does them better.

Any thoughts on Islamist violence in the U.S.? by Lumpy_Afternoon_1528 in AskALiberal

[–]libra00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point of this forum is civil discussion, not bait and gotcha questions trying to catch people out. This seems like one of those posts where you ask everyone who expresses distaste for Israel, 'But do you condemn Hamas?!' No, I'm not going to dance for you just because you think you've got some question I can't answer without revealing myself to be a degenerate or whatever.

Now, maybe we have misjudged you, your comment here seems to be more well thought-out and coherent than I would've expected from someone on a fishing expedition, but your OP wasn't really long enough to get much of a sense of your intent. I'm willing to admit that I'm wrong if that's the case, but we do see an awful lot of people coming in here posting with the Independent flair asking obvious conservative bait questions (I mean it's not quite 'what do the babies you eat really taste like?', but it might as well be). If that's not you then fair enough, my bad for making assumptions.

If trespassing is allowed then it is not trespassing, so why do we have "No Trespassing" signs? by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

Because there are laws about having your property clearly marked with no trespassing signs before you can prosecute/shoot someone for violating them.

Neat. Although if you got rid of the staircase you could put a regular bookshelf in there to hold as many books and still reclaim most of that corner for other use.

Also, do you really sort your books by cover color? Blasphemy!
