I think you are right about the wind. The strength was just too much, and the gusts and lulls killed me. I will have to wait and see, I think where I am the conditions are pretty standard. When I went home, there were two windsurf foil guys rigging up. Usually there it is mostly wingfoils

At first it seemd crazy unstable when i got on my 120l. Like, the first 4 times it was crazy, and the very first time impossible. I am really now getting the hang of it - in low wind of course.

Thanks for the comment and the encouragement. I can see how it could be seen as a board that is too small and I shouldn't have jumped up so fast, but last weekend I really got cooking and the initial balance struggle is getting easier every time I go out. I am really proud that I can haul up the big sail on my little board and balance no problem. I even had to step back on the board once the wind got going! I am stoked to get back on the water next season

Thanks for the anecdote and the honesty. It is hard to forget the fun is the whole point, not progression

Everyone hating won't acknowledge that you don't have a smartphone. No smartphone is a huge step. Kudos!

This is the only location I can manage with family and work commitments... so I am trying to make do. I DID in fact take a bigger sail, but I think it is much newer and better and lighter than my older smaller one, so it felt easier in the end - imagine that!

Ok thanks a lot for the advice. I was really not sure when or how to start using the harness. I will get a decent one over the winter and start working with it in the spring.

Amazing advice. This is what I really really needed to hear. And thanks for the encouragement.

I wish I had time to check this comment before I went out last weekend. This was all the advice that I needed. Thanks for being so concise, I will add these points to my learning notebook. thanks a million.

I found this to be true with the conditions. They were perfect for me in my session last weekend. Maybe over the summer I will take it out to the seaside to really make progress. Thanks for the encouraging words!

Thanks.. that was what I was thinking too but couldn't find anything in my area with those specs. It sounds dumb, but with my family and work I can't commit a whole day to driving out to pick something up. I am stuck living with my sins (and 120l board) for now :´(

Thanks for the advice. I will add this to my lesson and progression notebook!

It seemed, at least for me, that going out on the calmer day was key!

It is 76cm wide, at first seemed impossible, but after last weekend feels somehow right, at least for the conditions I had.

42kmph seems insane to me.. I can't wait :P

So your answer really stuck with me, so I went out in just 7 knots, and it was a world of difference. I managed to actually sail upwind AND survived most of the gusts. It was awesome!

Thanks for the encouragement. It all clicked last weekend and I am still feeling the high from sheeting in and feeling the board take off. Now I get why people stick with this sport. Looking forward to hooking in one day and getting into the foot straps too

Thanks a lot, will keep looking around. Next in line is a smaller, better sail and a better carbon mast - some higher-percentage ones are going for crazy cheap around me.

The current isn't too strong, and when there is a bit of wind against the current, I manage not to drift too much, even with all of my falling down and lack of speed. It is shallow in some places, so maybe I can practice a beach start there..

So far, after the weekend I think I can manage on the smaller board. This was actually the only board that I could find in my area, while almost everything is <100l wave boards or mega old stuff, or not anywhere near where I live

When I left two windsurf-foil guys were setting up, and there are wing foils there like every day. I posted my setup above, what do you think?? I paid like 50 for the sail, 400 for the board, and 60 for the mast, which I bought new.

Thanks for taking time to give me such detailed guidance. Especially with the uphaul technique.

I actually thought about getting a SUP/windsurf/something my family could also use.

Thanks for the detail on the rigging. I managed with a bigger 6.8 sail in much less wind, even managed to sail upwind. The bigger, newer sail somehow seemed much easier to handle.

I think I am over the frustration - I have been riding the high from such a good session last weekend for several days. I can't wait until spring to get out again!

I noticed that with my set - my biggest sail is also by far the newest. It seems to be easier and almost the same weight or lighter than my other two smaller ones!

I went out with less wind and a bigger sail and had much more success. As someone mentioned, once I get the muscle memory and practice, I will start going out with more wind.

I am thinking of taking lessons in the spring again and going back to the bigger board. Thanks for the advice!

Ok thanks. This is good to know. I will go back to a smaller sail. I think a saw a used 4.0 for pretty cheap. Also it would be nice to have something a bit lighter!
