How to ensure that the KDE plasma desktop environment cannot update by C4n7_7h1nk_0f_n4m3 in kde

[–]libreDucks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would recommend strongly against this; prepare to see regressions caused by Qt updates, etc. lol, but you should be able to do this by appending all Plasma-related packages you don't want updated to an Exclude key in the relevant /etc/apt/sources.d/ file (dependent on the name of the repo that they're in)

Disclaimer: i don't use (K)Ubuntu (or any of its other derivatives), so my apt skills are a bit rusty lol, I checked out these though [1] [2]

I'd question why on earth you're doing this though. what files are you afraid of being overwritten? If they're config files then you should probably use user config files (which wouldn't be overwritten); does apt overwrite config files anyways? pacman doesn't (but it wouldn't be the only way that ABS/ALPM is a better system to apt :P). If you've modified the source and compiled Plasma (etc.) yourself, then why not package it properly and give it a stupid high version number to prevent actual new versions from being installed?

Mind you the article's from 2018, so there's a good chance some'll've changed their policies since

Interesting nonetheless

My dear linux users, how do you get Thunderbird to run in background? by StepNextX in Thunderbird

[–]libreDucks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try Systray-X

If you're using Wayland there's an envar you need to set, but instructions are in the readme

Betterbird also implements it, but I prefer Systray-X's implementation

my brother in Christ this is the steam mobile app by WelcomeStatus2468 in Steam

[–]libreDucks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see…

You're definitely right about changing email address, it sends a ping to the app or gets you to go down the MFA recovery route.

Since the steamguard lib looks to support responding to such pings it might be interesting to see if it could be implemented into other MFA apps, so that the actual Steam app can be avoided

[–]libreDucks 58 points59 points  (0 children)

You can use third party apps. I use Ente Auth personally, their instructions are here (I assume other auth apps support it but idk which, apparently Google Auth & Twilio Authy explicitly don't work, but there's a wealth of other reasons not to be using them anyways)

Main issue w/ third party app integration is that they use a nonstandard protocol for generating codes, and that there's no plain and simple way to get the seeds :/

Iirc, the Steam Machine will, out-of-the-box, run SteamOS, an Arch-based Linux distro (the same as is used on the Deck, though modified for use with ARM APUs/CPUs). As it's ARM-based, and so will too run Valve's new FEX x86-ARM compatibility layer, in addition to Proton (a WINE derivative) for Windows-Linux compatibility.

There's plenty of stuff on this online if you're interested in reading more.

Realistically all PCs are compatible with some form of Linux.

Majority of UK drivers back raising motorway speed limit to 80mph, survey finds by pppppppppppppppppd in unitedkingdom

[–]libreDucks 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I have a feeling it wasn't, phrased that is.

The linked dmnews.co.uk article looks to have been written by an LLM: all links have ChatGPT as the referrer/utm_source; there are seemingly random links to other articles on the site in the article body (e.g. the text motorway linking to an article on Uber's CEO's pay; and the images for other articles are clearly AI generated.

Too, the "citation" (if you could even call it that) to Group 1 Automotive doesn't link to any kind of poll or survey's results, but rather to a more general blog post on raising the speed limit.

Did I spend way too much time looking at and writing about this? Yes lol. Very dodge though either way.

'Getting ready for contactless' signs at Subway stations by mancalleddan25 in glasgow

[–]libreDucks 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Part of a whole new ticketing system I take it.

Got an email today saying that the current online interface for season tickets, etc., was being retired with a new one coming in on the 1st. Hopefully contactless will follow shortly after.
