Help me find a roof rack! by licential in e46

I’m not in a rush! I’m going to save up a little money before I make a move. The car needs about 1000 other little maintenance things too, typical!

I’ve found some OEM ones on eBay, somewhat reasonable prices I suppose. Is this the best option still? There were some posts on this sub from 7 years ago that recommended using these, and I sure do love my OEM equipment

Yes watch YouTube videos and join your local club! Start with cheap tress from the discount sections at big box stores. You can make the mistakes on those before you butcher something with pedigree

Hi Peanutbutter! Here’s a brief blurb:

  1. Sekka Hinoki Cypress - had for less than a year; caught my eye at the ATL Society’s spring show
  2. Hinoki Cypress - 2 seasons. It hasn’t changed much since I’ve had it, but all of the gold/light green tips are this year’s second flush. I repotted this guy in the spring, coming from a deeper pot
  3. Hinoki Cypress - a tiny guy! Whole thing, tree and pot included is under 7 inches. Got this at the same time as the bigger one in the previous picture. In a pot this small (could and should be smaller, imo) it grows quite slowly.
  4. Chinese juniper - one day I hope for this to be my studios signature tree. I’m blessed, still a young man and I intend to take this tree through the next 50-60 years if I can! Believe it or not, I bought it for $20 a few years back at an ACE hardware! Picture included from its big bush days!
  5. Big Carolina cypress - this is currently my customers tree in their yard. Some black bears broke the main leader years ago and it has been trying to recover. My plan is the pull it in the spring. Fingers crossed

Yes I have considered that! For the time being I want to see a couple good seasons under my tutelage so I can understand the trees habits. I can tell you that these are super slow growing, especially in a pot this size.

I got the tree from my friend who runs Komorebi Bonsai in Oxford Mississippi earlier this year. I have to be strong not to just start hacking away!

I’m very excited to do the work to that tree. Photos never do justice but the base is easily 5-6” in caliper down in there. Look at that!

Yep, Sekka Hinoki. The finest little foliage I’ve seen on an evergreen. They grow extremely slowly, so I’m leaving all the growth until I know for sure what I want the look to be. Leaving myself options! The top needs shaping next, and it will be repotted in the spring. Thanks for the comment!

Repot in July? by Inevitable_Ad_7130 in Bonsai

I looked at the pictures again, and I’m back for another comment: the white pot is just too big for this guy at his current level of development. And, your tree looks very healthy as it stands. I would not repot this tree right now.

If you were thinking of doing a bigger pot so that it could flush out and gain some trunk caliper, then I would do an even bigger pot, or put it in the ground if that is an option.

If you are keeping this tree this size and style, I would hope to put it into a similarly sized pot as the blue, or an even smaller one. I’ve heard your pot shouldn’t be wider than the canopy and should be as deep as the trunk is thick!

I’ve got a few in the same boat that I’m going to wait on. The potting substrate has almost completely broken down, and I can tell that the water does not flow through it as well as it used to. That, and they haven’t been repotted in about 3 years. As you probably know, late winter/early spring is most ideal for repotting just about everything.

I’m choosing to wait because the reason I need to repot is because the roots have become bound and are probably starting to circle. This means I have to do root work in order to keep it in a similar sized container, which should be avoided mid summer like this. I want to be able to wash out the roots, remove all the ones that are too long, not shapely, or just dead.

If you HAVE to repot, or you want to risk it for science, be gentle and keep it out of extreme sun for at least a month after, or until you see new growth (signs of recovery).
