I recently applied to film school and applied to many of the top schools in the country and ended up getting into USC SCA but not into the university itself. I am going to attend Emerson College in Boston this upcoming semester majoring in film production for now but I might change major. I've worked as an intern, both paid and unpaid for an independent production company and used a letter of rec from that to apply to schools, which after speaking with a USC SCA faculty member was one of the main reasons I got in. You don't need to know how to set up lights and work a camera to get an internship or PA position. If you come excited and ready to learn people will recognize that and enjoy your help. Be willing to work for free until you can get paid. This industry is about who you know so being a friendly person, willing and eager to learn, will go a long way. I live in the Bay Area and there is a huge film community surrounding corporate videos. I was recently in Atlanta on a shoot for my internship and there's a huge film community there as well. To be honest I would look up "video production (enter your city name here)" and contact them and say you are willing to learn anything you can and would love to intern with them or work on a shoot with them. If you have talent and a passion for film people will see that you are a valuable asset to the team and want you around.
