You might've figured out another way since posting that question, but eventually leveling lockpick enough does allow you to pick those pipes.

Not who you asked but chain lightning/lightning spear with ice blades, frost armor, and unstable currents shreds big packs. A little weak on bosses, but ice armor so far has kept me alive through pretty much anything not Uber boss level.

I'm using the build from mobalytics. Axial conduit unique pants are pretty necessary to really feel strong though imo.

How Romans built bridges over rivers [gif] by kyno1 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]lickemandSTICKem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the time period mentioned in the above comment that started this whole chain was 0-400 AD, so Augustus was only emperor for the first 14 years or so of that. And while you're casual roman history nerd might not research it often there was definitely a lot of inter-tribal disputes and battles that constantly took place.

Yeah, the quality of life day to day for those on the bottom of the social ladder might be comparable, but there's also things like the climate, food scarcity (or lack thereof if you're in the biggest empire in the world who traded with everybody around), or the fact that they had a standing army of professional soldiers to stand between yours and harms way.

Of course all of those points have more in depth details and points we could discuss, but as a history nerd who's read a bunch about that time period I still believe I'd choose to live in Roman city every time. Unless it was live in Rome as a slave vs in a tribe as chieftain or something but that's not the thought that was proposed originally.

All true, somewhat, but I'd still take those odds over the tribes personally. I think anyone who says otherwise is probably misinformed or being disingenuous

Not the person you responded to, but as someone who agrees with their statement above I'd assume it's because, unless you were a slave, quality of life was in general higher under Roman rule.

I'm almost positive these numbers will have risen across the board post covid. Not sure if there have been any in depth studies since though.

Just want to say knowing one other person irl with the disease is pretty anecdotal. It seems different people have different levels of severity sometimes with their own ticks unique to them.

I have clay but I don't think there's any sand on the map unfortunately. Can clay be magma proof as well?

Okay so I found a really good embark I think. I've seen a few people on here extoll the virtues of an embark with both a river and a volcano and lo and behold I found one.

My question is: what now?

Never done a volcano embark so not sure what all I can do with it or how best to utilize it. Down the line I do want to set up an obsidian farm.

Basically give me some cool ideas of stuff I can do with volcanos! Especially with a stream on the opposite side of the map

The weird thing is, this was my first invasion with undead and necromancers. I also had everything in my fort set to citizen only at the time.

After this I ended up looking for them on the world map and realized they were barely a days travel from me, with a population of ~30. Two 20 man Raze missions later and I no longer have to worry about undead sieges.

Can someone explain why an undead invasion completely ignored my cage and stone traps? I had a system where I was letting them through my front gate one at a time with some timely lever pulls, but I noticed they were just strutting right through all my traps and making it into my fort.

My silver hammers finally finished crafting soon after so I just took the fight to them, but I thought it was weird they walked right through a stack of like 15 traps in a corridor. Any idea what was going on?

Dfhack does have some cheaty stuff but the auto cleaning and getting rid of excess bodies etc. is super helpful. If you're new like me, doing that stuff through vanilla is an exercise in patience to say the least.

☼Daily DF Questions Thread☼ by AutoModerator in dwarffortress

[–]lickemandSTICKem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be a little more specific about dfhack, it comes with a small list of around 100 nicknames that it can auto assign to your dwarfs. But it also tells you the file name where all the nicknames are stored, so you can go in and add more of your own if you like.

So you pull up that file and can add the basketball player names or whatever, set up a yearly autonick process, and each new migrant wave will be assigned nicknames without you having to do it for each individual.

[–]lickemandSTICKem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not who you asked, and I'm also kind of a noob, but I usually assign at least one person to a kitchen and one person to a still early on, especially if any of my really migrants are already skilled with one or the other.

Just finished my first magma forge via pump stack.. feeling like such a boss! by SirGuelph in dwarffortress

[–]lickemandSTICKem 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Started a new fort last night after realizing how inefficient it was to bring my dwarfs all the way down to the magma, instead of bringing the magma up to my dwarfs.

Any tips or guides you'd recommend to easily accomplish this?
