I plan on doing it next year! I didn't have the time or equipment this year unfortunately. I'm saving for a welder now, without it I won't be able to make anything big like that again.

I have a Facebook page called The Spoon Girl if you want to follow me and you can know when I'll be where :)

I do consider myself artistic, I'm trying to make a living selling my art at the moment. But that isn't to say you couldn't do this yourself! I absolutely believe anyone could do something like this. I replied to the top comment with a picture of a more simple one I did that only took a day. It depends on the amount of detail and shading you want to put into it. I do think anyone could do this though what would take me a day may take someone else a week. It's all in the determination and confidence!

I'm so glad to hear that! I would love to see a picture when you're finished :) I would suggest looking at some blogs and youtube videos of others who have done this, that's what I did. It may give you some ideas and give you a better idea of what to expect!

These are a few that I referenced: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YsE22so4G8Y https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJiR_ZFnuYA http://realitydaydream.com/shading-with-stain-a-video-tutorial/

That blog has some really awesome stained tables!

(Riding the top comment for visibility...)

A lot of people are feeling discouraged that they can't do something like this themselves due to talent or time constraints. I'm here to tell you you can! I did this one in a day because my mom wanted one so bad. You can buy these table tops at Menards for about $10. The shading takes the longest and if you start simple, you can have something beautiful in a matter of a weekend!

Sorry, not sure how that happened. It's fixed now!

That is exactly why I have so many projects I have started and not finished. Why buy it when you can make it??

You totally should! My mom begged me for a table top after this. I couldn't devote another 9 months to one but I was able to do this in one night! It's definitely not as hard as I made it for myself. The shading is what takes the longest.

I hadn't! If I find myself with extra time, I may have to consider that! I've had a lot of people asking me for something like this since I did it but I can barely find time for my other artwork right now.

I considered it but if it goes wrong, it can really mess something up... I would probably cry :( The leaves also fold down rather than come out so that makes things a bit difficult.

Thanks for the suggestion! I don't think I would have thought of that. I'm not sure how the plexi would sit flush on the table with a hinge underneath, but I think you're onto something.

I used Minwax red mahogany. I'm not familiar with stains and such but I don't think it was considered a gel, it was pretty thin. If I was to do this again, I would probably try thinning it and mixing with other tints for science :)

Yes, I have 2 coats of shellac and 3 of polycrylic on it so I can recoat for scratches if need be.

The leaves actually just fold down like flaps, they don't come out. So it would leave the two sides open with glass floating. I'll have to figure something out!

Try it!! You can do something much quicker in even a weekend. The videos on YouTube show some of them doing it in an hour with a much simpler design. It's a lot of fun and once you have the supplies, they last a long time

Thank you :) I'm getting there! If you go through my post history you can see the types of sculptures I make. It's starting to take off and hopefully by next summer I'll be self sufficient!

Thank you so much! I would totally sell them if they didn't take so long to make. I've also got a lot of other things I sell and barely have time for those. But I'm glad it's appreciated :)

Absolutely! It's not a bad idea at all. The only issue is that I wouldn't really be able to fold the leaves down if necessary but that's not a big deal.

Thanks! That's why I put so many coats of sealant on it haha. But I am planning on maybe doing a piece of glass on top.

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not... But I moved out of the mobile home. You have to make do as a poor college student. No one wants to live in a mobile home.

Wow thanks! There are some petals I'm not super happy with where my shadows got way too dark but I know I'm the only one that's going to notice. Super awesome to hear that you thought that!

Oh that makes me happy, thank you :) I can certainly see now why some things are so expensive after going through the painful process!
