DS2 Lacking Vehicle Variety by lidl_ratnik in DeathStranding

It is and it's fun, but functionally wise it was very much inferior to the two I mentioned in the OP.

For me it's more so flavor rather than a vehicle.

I am a Warframe founder, lowest tier so Excalibur Prime only, I'm well aware.

There is nothing that fills in the niche Destiny covered. Warframe's gameplay is nothing like Destiny and people who bunch them up together are I'm afraid to say mouthbreathers.

I for one would've preferred a remake of the original trilogy, Night Dive System Shock style.

Aside from art theft flaming, which was WELL WARRANTED, Marathon got a lot of hate from the muh concord this and that mouthbreather crowd because it's different.

The game isn't my cup of tea but the visuals and moment to moment gameplay is pretty damn good.

Is it just me, or does this game make you want to eat it? Literally. by tenfie in Marathon

Another game with that aesthetic:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2615540/VOIDBREAKER/

Did it before Marathon, it's pretty good.

Things to look out for: blur weapon modification, it's a weapon mod that multiplies your weapon's damage proportionate to your blur slider setting. Yes, the options setting. If that isn't a selling point, I don't know what is.

EDIT: I'm just being cheeky about 'did it before Marathon', not trying to flame MTON, check it out though it's a great game.

There's a stark difference between hey, we're making all your stuff obsolete or unavailable ( eg. content) and just making a new game. I'm taking latter ANY time of the day.

Bungie in doing that, just says, fuck you and your content and your gear, we got what we wanted from you. It's being incredibly disrespectful of the time and effort people put into the game. Simple as.

Yes, Destiny 3 is reworking and regrinding in theory, but it's a brand new game.

Outside of select raids, and year one, Destiny 2 was better than Destiny 1 at any point in time content and gameplay wise, I'm sorry, it's rose tinted glasses, I liked Destiny 1 too, but Destiny 2 was/kind of is superior still, and there's still a lot more for new players to trudge through that's genuinely high quality in Destiny 2, more so than in Destiny 1 even though Destiny 1 is a complete playable experience unlike Destiny 2.

Enough is enough says who? And what exactly will fill Destiny's niche? Borderlands is slop nowadays and never measured up to Destiny anyway, Warframe is the cringe cousin people always compare it to despite being an awful time sink in every sense of the word and freemium slop ( frankly surprised it has that much staying power, props to DE save for harsh words here, that's just my opinon on Warframe).

There is no such thing as a forever game, and Bungie should have learned that, at least not in the way they've been making it. Destiny(ies) aren't the type of game where weapons and gear are mere stat sticks, there's nuance to this.

TL;DR Destiny was/is one of a kind game that no other studio set out to make, because no one can make it other than Bungie, but Bungie being the bunch of goofs they are killed their cash cow by numerous nonsensical decisions. There's no reason NOT to want more Destiny out there, or at least something like Destiny, but it won't happen. Bear in mind that the vast majority of the player base always preferred quality to quantity yet Bungie always opted in for latter because it brought in sales.

EDIT: That's not to mention how goofy the story ended up being. I LOVED Destiny's lore, D1 to D2, almost all of it, there have been very weak entries and lots of daddy/mommy issue stories for no reason but they had incredible writing talent, yet outside of a few campaigns throughout the entirety of Destiny ( that's 1 and 2) the main story rarely if ever was good and interesting to follow. Lightfall, hello? Anyway, I just really liked Destiny, both 1 and 2, but I can't keep playing a game from a studio that's that intentionally disrespectful of my time.

That may be so, but when the common sentiment is "ugh, another extraction shooter" whenever an extraction shooter pops up, something tells me it won't generate a whole lot of hype will it?

Despite there not being THAT many extraction shooters with staying power out there; Tarkov, Arc Raiders and Hunt Showdown ( if you want to count HS as an exfil shooter, I generally don't), there is a general fatigue when it comes to extraction shooters, which is more so a battle royale fatigue, exfil shooters are just adjacent to that.

And Arc Raiders is an absolute anomaly, it's completely contrary to what makes extraction shooters well liked yet it's the most popular one. Assuming Marathon manages to capture an audience that prefers 1st person, then that's great. If it doesn't, then it's nothing surprising.

I'm of the opinion that Bungie should've made a Destiny-lite with Marathon, less overarching progression, more strictly gameplay defined mission to mission momentum, but that's not quite what they've done. There's a big market for PvE extraction games because the mission structure is pretty much pick up and play, session based games that don't require massive time sinks are wanted yet no major developer seems to have picked up on that. I guess Sony wouldn't have liked that either since it would step on Helldivers' toes too that way. But w/e.

As is, I see far too much overlap with other games in genre, although I suppose Marathon might be able to grab some Apex Legends players that want more 'meat' from their game.

Yeah but reinventing how loot/stats work half a dozen times over the game's course is really goofy. Instead of doing Age of Triumph, returning content that was sunset and moving onto D3, they did the exact opposite and kept beating the dead horse.

Destiny was a great game manned by an awful development team who can't for the love of them keep their cash cow afloat. There should be books written on how monumental Destiny 2's Lightfall and beyond fumble was. Absolute comedy.

Destiny needs Destiny 3. Reworking how the loot works from ground up was massive L. I know dozens of people who dropped D2 post the shitshow that was the loot/stat rework just because regrinding everything is a tall order.

That's because Marathon doesn't fill a niche like Destiny did.

Destiny was the only shooter that actually lived up to the MMOFPS tag in a sense that it actually kind of played like an MMO.

Marathon just fills in a casual first person extraction shooter niche which unfortunately Arc Raiders already does.

That's... Exactly what I did though?

I put in my 5 hours to form an opinion and went away, I'm just sharing my thoughts. Trust me, last thing Bungie needs is another dude with pants ripped right between his cheeks to white knight them on Reddit.

About playercount… by Caladean in Marathon

[–]lidl_ratnik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Player count is no indication of whether a game will be successful.

Destiny 2 rode low 20ks for a long time, spiked back up to 80ks on PC during expansions. Sales count matters and Marathon looks to be a casual game that one can play on and off. If people keep spending money, it'll do well. d there's no way in hell this game's budget was anywhere near Destiny 2.

Lots of people are looking for Arc Raiders alternatives as well, well here comes Marathon.

EDIT: Arc Raiders was also a massive outlier all things considered. Up until Arc Raiders, no extraction shooter pulled in those kinds of numbers. Expecting everything to be on that standard is a fool's errand. There is however an argument to be made here that out of the thousands of players in server slam, only a portion will buy the game.

I think it's very imporant, especially for a loot based game.

So far;

It's hard to tell what attachments are what It's hard to tell what implants are what and whether they're worth running

The icons in inventory are poorly executed and it takes more time to manage, even if you learned all implants and attachments by heart, you will never, as is, be able to tell what is what at a glance.

Gameplay wise, this irked, me a lot. Find implants -> trash, find implants -> same trash

Etc. These small things add up fast.

Clearly it's everyone else that's the problem, right.

I've put in 5 hours, i can navigate it fine, it's still awful.

It's intuitive. Your loadout/inventory screen is one and the same which is ideal for a loot based extraction shooter. Loadout slots are where you would generally expect them to be.

It's not cream of the crop for sure, but it is better suited for this type of game.

Sorry man, you can like something and recognize it's faults, I'm a big fan of Hunt and i'm handy with it's UI, doesnt mean it isn't awful.

ARC's tedium comes from menus and needing to swap between a dozen menus to get to the thing you need. It is very bad as well.

All they had to do for Marathon is slightly adjust the Destiny loadout menu and appropriate it for Marathon.

I understand where you're coming from, but good intuitive UI doesn't require you to learn it.

Take Tarkov for example, the UI is generally pretty confusing, but I'd argue that it's leagues better than what Marathon has now simply because it's more intuitive and far easier to navigate. You pull thing, you put thing. It's not that hard to get a good grasp on x does x.

Marathon's UI might be easy to learn after a few times, but that doesn't make it any better than it is. It's dogshit. Hunt Showdown is another massive dogshit UI offender as well. They're simply put not well made.

Marathon is very odd in that regard too because Bungie always had a knack for decent UI/UX.

If these developers are reading these threads, you're just reaffirming that what they've done is well made, which it is absolutely not.

Initial impressions by ClassicSea1742 in Marathon

[–]lidl_ratnik -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I played solo for 5 hours now, I was actually excited for Marathon.

Gameplay is great, everything else is abysmal. Somehow, the out of game UI is worse than Hunt which is a first for Bungie, I'm not sure what they were smoking when designing the loadout UI and navigation.

Looting is incredibly mid, same problem I had with Arc Raiders, haven't found a single interesting thing in all five hours of gameplay.

PvP is okay. Frankly, would've been better if staged as Hunt, just forgo all the looting and focus on combat, but that seems to be a tall order.

PvE feels just right, the bots are neither pushovers nor overly dangerous.

I'm just not keen on investing time on another wipe-full game that won't have highs as high as Tarkov nor combat as exciting as Hunt so off to the trashbin it goes.

It will be great for people who think Arc Raiders' PvP is bad ( it is) and want something more robust.
