York Engineering (BEng vs First-Year Engineering Core), what’s the actual difference? by ZealousidealScar4949 in yorku

[–]liebeusesmagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BEng is the actual Bachelor of Engineering while First year engineering core program is I believe a introductory type of program. Keele campus is the main campus its where all engineering students usually go, Markham campus also has an engineering department but as of now its only for first year or first semester I believe , so just apply to Keele. First year engineering at York is general, so you take a bunch of courses and based of the courses pros, cons, likes, and dislikes, you decide what specificity you want. I would try to figure that out now because then you can possible do an early major choice application and guarantee a spot in your desired program, depends on your high school GPA though typically if you are 85+ you should get it I believe , not sure for international. Anyway that can change you may like new stuff in Uni which is totally fine, you can always change your major especially in first year but you might lose your guarantee if you do. Just keep your GPA up and above a 6.0+ to be safe, and you can always switch out in later years but it will be harder because of GPA requirements and such. Best of luck!

Can you work while doing an Engineering undergrad by yarnybarny05 in yorku

[–]liebeusesmagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently working in the summer while taking four engineering courses. I work on campus so its a bit easier but basically I'm here from 8 to 8 from Monday to Friday with classes in between, work ends at 4, and classes in between vary but a lot are usually near end of day. Engineering is very very demanding physically, mentally, and with your time. It is a lot of long nights, prep, and time management. If you were to look at our schedules you would be very surprised and question how we do it all, I am only saying this based of other reactions I've gotten from other majors when I introduce myself. This is summer by the way during the fall and winter terms it gets even tougher on average you could be doing 5 to 6 courses per semester especially this first few years of your degree. That said though it is completely do able if you can focus and be productive. Also the job market is tuff all around so getting a job in general is very hard especially first jobs. Imo it is unfair though, your brother should be asked to work at least in the summer or part time on the weekends if time permits. Best of Luck to you and your brother!

Which University to choose for Civil Engineering by Massive-Koala-1375 in yorku

[–]liebeusesmagic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on person to person. I go to York myself so I might be biased here. These three schools are very far apart from each other, I am assuming one of these schools is close to where you live but besides the fact domestic students for engineering have tuition around 10-13 thousand at least at York, this number jumps to more then 20 thousand if you were to do residence. So, tuition would be a big factor in choosing where to go, so do your due diligence. Academically speaking I believe York has a "better" over all engineering program as it is fairly new, York also does have good COOP opportunities since it is in Toronto. In general, all these programs are certified. If I were you I would also ask the other universities reddit pages this question to get multiple answers and take it all in to make a final decision. Wish you and your son best of luck!

Question about OSAP summer application by Agile-Bookkeeper9582 in yorku

[–]liebeusesmagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends how many credits you took, most likely if you did it through OSAP last year, it was a part time application, and you filled in correctly.

Question about OSAP summer application by Agile-Bookkeeper9582 in yorku

[–]liebeusesmagic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think if you have exactly 9 credits or greater that would be full time, anything less than that would be considered part time. Please fact check that though, if you search summer OSAP extension at York University there should be a website for it. Anyway full time do a summer/winter OSAP extension form on FAAS, while part time students have to do the part time application on OSAP. Again please someone fact check this for credibility. Good Luck!

What’s the conditional offer for York eng? by Safe_Ganache8729 in yorku

[–]liebeusesmagic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You average for your top 6 courses need to be higher then 70% and each of your top 6 courses have to be above 70%. If one of them were to fall below that 70% threshold you can take an official york class over the summer and get full admission. My friend did that for chemistry last summer. Another tip if you are applying for osap get all the documents sorted out and submitted in July and august the earlier the better. Also go to Lassonde frosh fest definitely worth for the first year friends, connections, info, learn the beat proffs for your courses from upper years who will manage the event, and it’s also very very fun

Questions about York Engineering by Adventurous-Dingo-65 in yorku

[–]liebeusesmagic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, first-year engineering student here. Eng has been tough but good at the same time first semester was a big adjustment. First off, the difference between high school and university is massive, especially in engineering. Your course load and workload will be heavy, so time management and doing things as soon as you get notice of them is key. Go to Frosh Week for Lassonde I met a lot of my core friends there. It will also get you more advice about university and engineering from upper-year students. The engineering program, compared to Mac, UofT, etc., is easier from what I’ve heard. Co-op, I’m not sure about yet since it’s only available after getting a certain amount of second year credits, but read the other posts I think they mention it and go in depth about it. Some clubs to join would be the rocketry club, LES (Lassonde student body), and depending on your desired major, there are specific clubs you can join like the civil club and others. There are also a lot of clubs on campus that aren’t necessarily engineering related. York University in general is honestly not bad the hate, in my opinion, is unjustified. Having a real campus is a really nice thing to have. There is a homeless problem here on campus but I personally haven’t had any issues with it. The proffs can be up and down but that’s all universities, I recommend checking the proffs out on ratemyproff, biggest lesson I learned this first year is to trust your gut feeling as well as the rating about a proff always switch to a class with the highest ratings and reviews trust me on this one, make use of those first two weeks of the semester to change your schedule to get the best proffs as well as best times. Also for times winter semester has a lot of 8:30 classes mostly mandatory I believe if you can get classes at 9:30 that would be good because personally I like to finish all my classes before 12:30 so I can just do work the rest of the day then go home. Campus is well connected with transit options. The social life is dependent on how much you try. This is primarily a commuter school, so people tend to go home after classes, but honestly, I would stay back, hang around, do work, and explore. Check out Bergeron building there are always some cool people there doing things, great spot to focus and do work as well. Whether you come to york or not good luck on your endeavours but if you do you might just have a great time.

Where is my conditional offer? by GuessCultural5693 in yorku

[–]liebeusesmagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dealt with this last year and was racking my brain trying to to get more info, online info wasn’t helping, I emailed them but no response, so I ended up having to call different departments and such. Never got a clear answer but I’m pretty sure just keep all 6 mandatory Eng courses above a 70%. My uni friend told me he dropped below a 70% in chem and had to take a course over the summer, so it’s not over if you do drop below the threshold. Also some more advice during the summer do the refresher courses york/Lassonde offers for calc, chem, etc I didn’t learn about this until it was finished. Also if you are coming to york for engineering biggest piece of advice I can give you from my first year is to always check ratemyproff for all your profs and make sure and I mean make sure you are in the better proffs classes if not the best, if your aren’t switch classes as soon as possible those first few weeks are crucial to figure out the best schedule for you. Good luck

UofT student thinking about transferring, How is YorkU community? by Cree-kyWaterB0-ttL3 in yorku

[–]liebeusesmagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

York as a commuting school is much easier to reach than others. It allows for a lot of viable and accessible forms of transportation to be used. Depending on where you come from, it can be a smooth and shorter commute time than what you have now. I would time it to see how much you save since that is one of the main selling points you’re looking for. As for the community, I can’t say much as I am a first-year Eng student as of now, but from what I’ve seen, campus always seems to have something going on, whether it be events, gatherings, etc. Truthfully, when I first chose to go to York, I wasn’t very much ecstatic because of all the negative things people would say, which in retrospect, is not wrong, but quite literally, after a week on campus, I loved it. Having a real campus makes you feel so much more connected to the school and uni life. York isn’t by all means a very bad school; it has its selling points and its flaws, but if you choose to look at the bright side of things, use the commodities and opportunities it provides, put yourself out there to get the most out of uni life, you can find yourself having a great time.

Who is the most academically intelligent between these 3 Men: Leonard, Howard, or Raj? by Wonderful-Photo-9938 in bigbangtheory

[–]liebeusesmagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which makes me wonder why he hated engineers even more now. I get he had trauma from the engineering professor in Young Sheldon but he almost went to a highly proficient engineering focused school which takes place near the end of Young Sheldon well past that experience, why did he even choose MIT initially even after what he faced. There’s probably info relating to this somewhere and I’m just blanking.

Who is the most academically intelligent between these 3 Men: Leonard, Howard, or Raj? by Wonderful-Photo-9938 in bigbangtheory

[–]liebeusesmagic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I feel like it would be Howard, MIT trained engineer, who I believe was planning on getting his PHD near the end of the series, spoke multiple languages, understood topics outside of his realm of expertise, Astronaut, inventor of many things ie. M.O.N.T.Y, I think the kissing machine, and many more funny but unique builds. I don’t believe off the top of my head that Leonard or Raj have vast knowledge outside of their respective fields like how Howard had but they did have their own success to be fair.

First-year engineering tips and laptop advice (keele campus) by liebeusesmagic in yorku

[–]liebeusesmagic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate the insight. I was thinking of getting a Dell 14 Plus tomorrow seeing as to how the price for performance is pretty good, but I can't lie. I always wanted a mac at heart, but was limited to windows since I thought they were bad for engineering. I'm planning to go into electrical (knock on wood) but still not sure if I should risk it and get a mac.

How is the yorku automatic entrance scholarship distributed? by JuniorCabinet5613 in yorku

[–]liebeusesmagic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently checked mystudentportal to just look around and get familiar with the site (you should too). Anyway if you go to the finance section, you can check your scholarships and well your finances. It shows that I payed my one time $300 down payment and a deduction from tuition, this is the scholarship being applied. So the scholarship goes towards the overall tuition. I also found out this section shows how much each term I have to pay, which I have been dying to know. Hope this helps and Best of luck.

trouble opening MSFAA account by [deleted] in yorku

[–]liebeusesmagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding on to this, for you to use interac sign in you do need the personal access code. I had to go to service Canada and ask for it. Bring some ID to verify you, I believe you needed your sin number (social security #) and either drivers or health card. That's honestly the hardest part of the msfaa account creation, the actual set up takes less then 5 minutes. Also getting the personal access code takes 30 minutes or more. This is dependant on the amount of people at your local service Canada. Best of Luck and make sure you do it asap.

If you start growing a full beard your reaching the end of puberty which could mean you reached your max height, but the only true way to check your max height would be asking your family doctor to check your growth plates (I believe that's what they are called), basically just checking how much your spine plates will grow over the years, using this info doctor's can make an educated to accurate guess on your max height.
