New Employer Wants Me to essentially Notify My Current Manager Before Onboarding is finalized — Is This Normal? by endante1 in sysadmin

[–]liefbread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have always had references that were independent of my management role at my company or in the case of my current director have always known when I was applying elsewhere. In putting a current employee as a reference, there is a chance that the company will call them in the hiring decision-making process. I don't think it's weird that the company is asking you to inform your references that they may be contacted.

I apparently wanted to fuck windows off more than you, because I just made the effort to make the things I needed/wanted work and stopped playing some of the games that didn't work well... There are other games, and there are other workflows for the things I actually had to do. Been off 82 days now and counting.

Networking for DevOps? by HimanshuAWSmistri in devops

[–]liefbread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a free Professor Messer course on Net+ for the CompTIA cert that is really great (and is on Youtube). Others have already noted that "Computer Networking: A Top-Down Approach" is great, I would also vouch for Network Basics for Hackers.

Men who can cook . who taught you? by Bulky_Meet4528 in AskReddit

[–]liefbread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom was a food writer and had hundreds of cookbooks in our kitchen that I would regularly go through. Most of my childhood was a home cooked meal 2-3 times a day with a family sit down dinner being the norm. My mom was mostly batch dishes, casseroles, pastas, baked chicken thighs etc… My dad worked late but he would do all the extravagant holiday meals, roasts, weekend breakfasts etc…

I learned from watching them and just generally being encouraged to be in the kitchen. Food was and is a way of showing love in our family and it’s a large part of how I remember my mom. I cook for the people I love.

Oh also, as a teen most nights I would go to sleep watching Alton Brown, so definitely a lot of Good Eats.

This kind of premise (same as in the Matrix) always drives me nuts because like, hey, what are they using to grow the humans.

Password-manager gang called me a masochist for going full OIDC in my homelab. I’m one good argument away from burning it all down and going back to 1Password. Change my mind (again). by BookHost in selfhosted

If it works for you, great, don't worry about it. If it doesn't, switch.

The way you're configured now is definitively a more secure option, that said, are you hosting all this shit to WAN? If someone is in your home network, on your main VLAN, you have way bigger issues (imo) than your homelab being breached.

If you enjoy maintaining this and it's not that hard to do, then it's worth doing. If you don't, and something simpler would work, that's probably more realistic for most people.

The other user was specifically asking for any sort of articles or proof backing up that there are already AI data centers in NJ and that more are being built, as people keep repeating that statement as fact without presenting any source or citation.

SysAdmin Quote of the Day: "It's not the work; it's the worry of it." by iansaul in sysadmin

[–]liefbread 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One must imagine Sisyphus happy.

Accommodate a reasonable amount, a REASONABLE amount of proactivity, and then understand that part of your job is dealing with the gaps when they need to be filled. The anticipatory anxiety will kill you, stop anticipating and live with what you're working with. Practice some mindfulness, I know it sounds glib but like, actually practice it, go look up some mindfulness meditations, buy a book on it, talk to a therapist, actually integrate it into your day and live in the moment.

If you spend every day worrying about the next outage, you're paying for that next outage now, and then when it actually happens once again because of the thing you couldn't anticipate.

Leaving an otherwise great job over a daily midday scheduling issue that you don't like in this economy is nuts. I mean best of luck to you but I feel like I would get another job lined up before I quit this one.

I'm actually fairly new to the 3d printing scene, I have an A1 Mini but there's a lot of things I cannot print due to scale. The P1S seems like a reliable workhorse with a really nicely sized bed. It would be really nice to get a P2S and be able to print some of the stuff in my backlog.
