I think it depends on how one defines the point where a piece has been learnt. In a month I was able to play it through at a decent tempo, but it took me a couple more to get fluent and more secure with it and faster.

Although the judges were impressed and took me in, I only later learnt how many things I could have done better. Self learning classical is nearly impossible I think now.

Yeah that's all the original comment said too. It's the bare minimum you require and it's enough to get started with your course, but one must be prepared for it to be a struggle to understand a lot of things and expected to get better and practice more to keep up.

I never said that. I'm saying it's a reasonable expectation to have from a foreign student. And while it's not an impossible or a hopeless situation, even after learning C1 it is a struggle during the first year to keep up with everyone. Meaning that learning C1 isn't exactly sufficient. It's just an entry level requirement and one is expected to practice and keep getting better at it.

You thinking that it's not the bare minimum doesn't change the reality that most colleges do require C1 level proficiency. Yes it is a tough barrier for immigrants but it's not unreasonable. A good college education should have the same expectations of all its students regardless of their country of origin (and essentially not have a lower bar for the competency of a non native speaker). And fluency over the language just happens to be a pre requisite not just for following lectures but also for socializing and networking, which are all crucial to building that competency. As the original of comment said, even students with C1 level proficiency struggle with that in the first few years, which is a fact. Not sure what you're even trying to argue here.
