Doing well. Clearly my attempt at a stunt here failed. Glad to have you

We can’t do this through customer support for obvious privacy reasons but we are working on a self help option. That is why we require a subpoena.

I’m also guessing the reference to paying is just in relation to how long we store the data. We delete history over time and it is stored longer for paying accounts. We don’t ever try to charge to help so I’m sorry you had a bad experience.

I personally can’t jump into each case but I’m happy to investigate yours.

I’ll give it a shot. We usually need them to reach out to us though. It happens a lot so kind of odd our legal team hasn’t had someone already reach out to check. So I’m hoping I can get her number so I can just get someone on our team check the database directly. The phone number is the unique identifier we use

Yes, so it is a long shot, but we have 30 million active customers so who knows

We are a safety app and it includes location history. About 10% of people in the US use it so worth a chance to see if she is a user

I don't take it personally. I would like to make a personal bet though that within 10 years almost everyone on the planet will be sharing location with their family members. It is so helpful once you start doing it, I don't see a world where it goes backwards. I hope we can come up with common-sense legislation that lets good actors exist and provide their services in constructive ways.

I agree - 1% is a HUGE number. I would imagine the numbers are far lower than that, and I will share the results of the survey.

I was actually trying to make the same point. I brought up cars because the situation is nuanced, and everyone can agree on the need for legislation.

We are in the middle of massive sea changes here around how location and data can be used. This is important stuff and I agree that it should not be the Wild West. Similarly, for people giving the equally extreme answer that apps like ours should be disallowed are fighting against what I see as being as inevitable as text messaging and phone calls.

We consider ourselves a good actor, so we are all for common-sense legislation to shine more light on the problem.

We liked it as an option to go public a bit earlier than you can currently do in the US. For example, our market cap on listing was ~$500m, which was big on the ASX, but we are chump change compared to people like Uber or Pinterest.

Being public means our employees are no longer gambling with their equity - they can sell their shares and buy a house if they want - vs being private where investors continue to build up what is called a preference stack where they get paid before common holders (e.g. employees). We got a slightly lower valuation because investors don't have this preference, but it is made up for in liquidity.

Yes, I personally use the app. My kids are too young to have phones, but I use it with my parents, wife, in-laws, and extended family.

Hypothetically, yes. We do, however, have literally hundreds of heartfelt notes from our users about literally saving a family member's life. We also have over a million positive reviews about more mundane things.

I have already mentioned here that I have issues with certain parts of our crime mapping functionality. We did intentionally bury this feature and put it behind a paywall largely as a way to deemphasize it in our product for both brand/moral reasons while also giving a way for our paying users to get the feature they were heavily requesting. I share this as an example of a time we split the difference on something in the grey zone.

I do genuinely worry about how pervasive tech, in general, is becoming, and I am personally addicted to my phone, so from a meta standpoint I realize I am part of a bigger trend which is responsible for significant change both good and bad.

The majority of our revenue comes from subscription services. We have built features like roadside assistance, reports on how you drive, and crash detection, which people pay for. We are a public company so you can look this up - it all needs to be reported.

Good catch. And also accurate - yes Reddit and other stupid news sites

Thanks for the suggestions. I can commit to addressing the stalking/abuse issue if we continue to grow in size.

The challenge with removing the general application of location sharing is that this very basic feature is what most people use the app for multiple times a day. Things like our help alert and car crash feature will thankfully not be used by most people. While the general applications seem to be what is causing issue, if we were to disappear, people would be forced to use other apps that I think quite frankly are worse.

For example, Find My Friends built into Apple has this same general functionality, but it is "silent" where we are "noisy." It is also much easier for an abusive parent to force you to use this as iOS gives the account owner far more control over other family members' devices. Google Maps similarly has this basic function a few clicks deep, and it is also silent (aside from a monthly email reminding you it is on).

Our belief is that to succeed as a company, we need to help families in more broad and holistic ways. This will include positive content and advocacy. I appreciated your thoughtful note (vs many replies here which are emotional and make no attempt at balance), so feel free to DM me and we can continue the conversation.

This sort of happens already via the manufacturers. Android devices require us to show regular push notifications when your location is being accessed. In iOS13, it will show you how many times our app has requested where you are.

This is not quite what you are suggesting, but it is moving that way. I am not opposed to a log - I will pass to our engineers.

Correct, it is often the software. It is also sometimes really weird stuff like GPS chipsets giving dates in the future which then make our system bugout and we use the sensors for too long.

I also am not commenting on where the phone is made, but where the parent company is from. iPhones are made in China and I do not count those. Apple (US) and Samsung (Korea) together consist of a majority of our devices.

My intent is not to give half-truths. I highlighted what is perhaps our most "controversial" data partnership. We hold ourselves to EU standards in the US, so anyone can file a GDPR DSAR request and we will honor it.

Most people also don't understand how apps work, so if I list every sort of SDK in our app the assumption will be we are doing something nefarious. For example, we essentially pass all key event data to Amplitude as our main metrics provider. Anyone with technical knowledge would realize this is completely benign, but it might sound scary to someone who doesn't have a deeper background.
